In 2015, the City of Brandon commissioned Prairie Architects Inc. to address the expansion and redevelopment of the aging 1970 terminal building at McGill Field in order to accommodate larger airline carriers and their enhanced check-in, screening, boarding, luggage and arrival services. The design of the terminal expansion incorporated various aspects of green building performance measures to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. LEED is a green building rating system that awards points for various aspects of green building performance including: Selecting and developing the project site in a responsible mannerReducing potable water consumptionReduction energy consumptionChoosing materials carefullyProviding a quality indoor environmentInnovative building features Depending on the number of points achieved, buildings can obtain a Platinum, Gold, Silver, or certified LEED rating. The Brandon Municipal Airport terminal project has achieved Gold Certification. “This project marks a huge milestone for the City of Brandon as a corporation. There are several LEED certified buildings in the community but this is the first municipal LEED certified building,” noted City of Brandon’s Environmental Initiatives Coordinator Lindsay Hargreaves. “Originally the team was striving for silver. Source: Brandon Police Service Media release On Sunday morning, a resident of Inglewood Street reported a Break and Enter to their garage that occurred sometime overnight. An unlocked vehicle was entered and the garage door opener was used to access the garage. An ice auger and numerous other items/tools were stolen. A resident on Lloyd Crescent reported that sometime overnight, their vehicle was entered and the garage door opener used to access the garage. An air compressor, Milwaukee power tools, three bicycles and sunglasses are among the stolen items. Police investigation continues on both incidents.

The City of Brandon’s Parks & Recreation Services wish to advise the public that they will begin a controlled burn of Elm tree debris impacted by Dutch Elm Disease in the area of the Crystal Pits (1825 Victoria Avenue East) on Monday, December 14, 2020.   The City of Brandon undertakes the removal of diseased, dead, or dying Elm trees in accordance with guidelines laid out by the Province of Manitoba.   Approximately 600 Elm trees will be removed as part of the 2020-2021 program, with the vast majority of them being dead or diseased trees removed from along the Assiniboine River Corridor.   The department has applied for and received the proper permitting from Brandon Fire and Emergency Services, and the fire will be monitored 24/7 by City staff. It is anticipated the burning should be completed by the afternoon on Friday, December 18, 2020. Westman residents opened their hearts and lined up in record numbers to contribute to the food drive organized by Samaritan House Ministries in conjunction with the CP Holiday Train.  A socially distant drive thru event was held outside the Samaritan House at 820 Pacific Avenue from 6-8pm December 12th.  Executive Director Barb McNish was thrilled with the turnout saying the lineup stretched several city blocks and was continuous for more than an hour and a half. “We are so grateful for the huge response. It is only when the community helps us, can we help others.”  Photo: Cathie Crossin The donations collected this evening alone, weighed in at over 5800 pounds (2634kgs).
