Ice Kings, Wolfpack & Grrrowl pickup championship hardware
The three champions crowned in their respective divisions of week 2 in the Source for Spots AAA Hockey Challenge all had one thing in common, they all went undefeated over the weekend. Former NHL players Aaron Rome (2010 Ice Kings) and Josh Green (2010 MB Hawks) were each seen coaching teams in the 2010 bracket. Former Wheat King power forward Tyler Coulter also coached a team, the 2005 Westman Winterhawks. Coulter picked up his first win as a coach in the Source for Sports AAA Summer Challenge, improving his overall record to 1-11 in the process.
In the 2010 age division the Ice Kings (pictured above) upended the Southwest Oil Caps 12-6 in one of the weekends finals. The Ice Kings received a big game from Reid Nicol as he registered 4 goals and 3 assists in the divisions final contest. Nicol was a dominant force all weekend amassing 29 points, in just 5 games played. Braydon Watt (3g,1a) and Nash Lenton (2g,1a) had multiple point games as well. Cooper Dryden picked up the win in net. Zander Clarke and Markus Knaub both replied with 2 goals each for the Oil Caps.
The Man-Sask Wolfpack (pictured above) had an easy time of it in the 2005 division as they clubbed Winnipeg Future Jets 10-1 in a game played at Westman Place. Carter McKay picked up a hat trick while Dylan Price and Tyler Stevenson each chipped in with two of their own. Single markers came off the sticks of Kersey Hollingshead, Colton Pushie & Carter Skarbon. Won Huh was the lone skater to beat Wolfpack’s goalie Walker Berner.
In the weekends most competitive final, the Sask Grrrowl U14 female hockey team received 20 saves from goaltender Amaya Giraudier as they blanked the U14 Westman Jr. Wildcats 3-0. Allee Gerrard, Kaitlyn Gilroy & Keara Merriman each dented the twine once in the win. The Grrrowl only surrendered 4 goals all weekend in the 5 games they played in.
