Brandon Police Service Media Release

There has been a marked increase in the number of stolen bikes this year. As such the Brandon Police Service would like to remind the public there are things they can do to help prevent bike theft:

  • Invest in a heavy duty lock. A steel “U”-Lock or “D”-Lock is tougher and harder to get through than a cable lock
  • Having a second lock to secure both wheels and frame is recommended.
  • Lock your bike up in area where there is more pedestrian / vehicle traffic
  • Do not leave your bike unattended and unlocked for even a few minutes
  • Even though it might seem safer, many bikes are stolen right out of people’s own homes and yards. We recommend that you lock your bike to a non-moveable metal fixture if storing your bike in a garage or shed.

In addition to this:

  • Write down your bicycle’s serial number, make, model, color, and other distinguishing characteristics, and keep this information in a safe location
  • Take photos of your bicycle. This will come in handy if you have to describe your bicycle to Police

It is imperative that you record your serial number. The vast majority of stolen bike reports received by Police a serial number is not known. The serial number not only assists Police in returning a stolen bike to the rightful owner, it also allows for those responsible for the theft to be held accountable.
