Police seize additional 560,000 contraband cigarettes

On September 16, the Brandon Police Service reported the seizure of over 3.5 million contraband cigarettes and the arrest of 4 individuals.
Since that time, police have executed 3 additional search warrants at 3 properties in Brandon. An additional 560,000 contraband cigarettes have been seized. Also located was a large quantity of stolen power tools believed to be stolen from within the city of Brandon and surrounding area.
Two of the original suspects face additional charges of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and numerous charges in relation to the contraband tobacco.
It should also be noted as previously released on Thursday, September 17, officers conducted a traffic stop on the #1 Highway near 18 Street North. Located in the vehicle was 11 cases of unstamped cigarettes. Two males from Alberta were arrested and charged with numerous offences including possessing more than 25 units of unmarked tobacco under the Tax Administration Act. Whether the origin of this seizure is related to the original tobacco seizure is still under investigation.
The culmination of these investigations resulted in the seizure of over 4 million contraband cigarettes and approximately $50,000 worth of stolen property. Police believe stolen property was being exchanged for the purchase of contraband cigarettes. Some of the stolen property has been identified and returned to the owners. Police continue to investigate the origin of the remaining stolen items.
