We Are Global Citizens: Imagine the Future of Brandon

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is pleased to announce an event with Dr. Satomi Tozawa, We Are Global Citizens: Imagine the Future of Brandon! Satomi recently received her doctorate in Education from Hokkaido University and has been researching community art between Canada and Japan. She will be providing an interactive art workshop and community discussion, with a creative hands-on art project for all ages. Satomi invites all community members of all ages to attend this free talk and workshop at the AGSM and explore ideas about creating a vision for the future of Brandon: “Hometown is a place where your heart belongs. Even if you have grown up in other places, Brandon could be your second hometown if you are currently living here now. As Brandon is becoming more culturally diverse, it is important to explore how to create an intercultural community together, which is one of the goals that current Global Citizenship Education aims for. We are going to discuss what we need to do to make Brandon a better place as global citizens by creating a vision as a group with discussion, images, and words. All ideas will be respected, and everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts through words, visual images, collage, pictures, and more. We will address any issues the city is currently facing and explore solutions together based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” Dr. Satomi Tozawa, from Hokkaido, Japan, is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Hokkaido University and a Coordinator for International Cooperation at JICA Hokkaido. She completed a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Literature at Brandon University as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar focusing on contemporary and electroacoustic music. She also received a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from the University of Alberta, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from Hokkaido University. Her dissertation discussed the function of Socially Engaged Art (SEA) that bridges art and everyday life. Her current research is focused on establishing a curriculum for global citizenship education in life-long learning that employs elements of SEA. She is currently working in the field of Socially Engaged Art and has worked with numerous students in Japan, a hybrid online and in-person exchange class at the AGSM with youth from both Brandon & Japan, and has been learning about community-based work at Art City in Winnipeg. This event is free to attend and is open to adults, families, and youth. Small children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  All art materials are provided.
