Revisiting a hidden gem located 30 minutes from Brandon

Sometimes all you need is a day to recharge, which is why today we decided to re-visit one of the hidden gems that we discovered in our travels last summer. Last August bdnmb.ca introduced our readers to a hidden gem (CJ's Snack Shack) located just 30 minutes from the city.  Conveniently situated inside Rivers Provincial Park (beach and campground), CJ's Snack Shack is the perfect day getaway for those families looking to hop in their car for a change of scenery. Once you have finished chowing down on some of the amazing food, you can also choose from a number of activities to complete your trip including mini-golf, kayak & paddle boat rentals, or a relaxing day on the beach. Owners Lorne & Sue Green told bdnmb.ca they made a number of enhancements over the offseason including constructing a new expanded building to better serve their clients. They also added a small general store, new menu items, and additional staff to handle the increased workload. They now are also the provider of firewood within the park. The new season has started off very busy for the couple who said they are in the midst of their Canada Day planning. In addition to several menu specials there will be a mini-golf competition with prizes in different categories. They will also be introducing a new special menu item...a tortilla stuffed with a cream cheese mixture filling that is rolled & deep fried and then tossed in cinnamon sugar. CJ’s also offers a variety of ice cream treats like hard ice cream, floats, milkshakes, deep fried ice cream, and a funnel cake sundae. Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/cjssnackshack/ CJ’s Snack Shack and Mini Golf is open from mid-May to mid-September.

Day Trippin: 7 km trail, scenic views, observation tower & more

If you want to get out of the house and experience a hike full of scenic views that will take you alongside a lake, through wetlands, deep wooded areas and even a pasture then the Turtle’s Back Trail is for you. Located about 20 minutes southeast of Boissevain in William Lake Provincial Park, the trail is roughly 7 km and culminates at the Turtle’s Back Summit where you will find an observation tower overlooking William Lake. Even though the trail does get pretty steep near the summit, it shouldn’t be a problem for anyone with any kind of hiking experience and the views at the top are definitely worth it. Before the summit there is even a picnic area so pack yourself a picnic and have a snack along the way. The trail also has two different paths if you want to shave off a km there or back. After the hike you can take a dip in the lake at the beach in the park to cool off. Also before you get back to Brandon make sure you stop at The Busy B in Boissevain to grab some delicious ice cream or other snacks.
