Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Community Services Department is very pleased to announce that its popular Music in the Parks program will bring FREE music programming to three locations across the community this summer, beginning one week from today. This year’s program kicks off Tuesday, June 4th in Princess Park with a performance by the always energetic Crocus Plains School student collective, CP Express, and promises an eclectic mix of performances each week through to the end of August. While the bulk of this year’s performances are being featured in Princess Park in the heart of Brandon’s downtown, three weekly performances will be staged in Rideau Park at the new community pavilion space located at the far north end of the park. Preparations are also underway for two very special Thursday Music in the Parks performances to take place this summer at the newly-opened Festival Park at the Riverbank Discovery Centre – watch for details on those additional performance dates coming soon! The City of Brandon’s annual Canada Day Celebrations at the Riverbank Discovery Centre is quickly approaching and organizers have planned a fun-filled day for those attending. This year the main stage entertainment begins at noon and the day ends with the popular fireworks show scheduled for 11:00 p.m. Throughout the day there are many activities/attractions planned including face painting, Tag 'Em Children's Entertainment and Fusion Children's Entertainment. Prairie Helicopters will be onsite offering scenic rides over the city. Just 4 Kicks, Full Flannel Jacket, Misty Street and Johnson Crook are among the main stage entertainment. The first few days of June promises to be very busy with several different family-themed activities planned including the Westman Dreams for Kids Country Fair, Touch-A-Truck Brandon, and the Kiwanis Kar Derby. The Kiwanis Kar Derby will be held on Saturday June 1st, on the Rideau Street hill next to Rideau Park. Participation is for children between the ages of 8 and 14. Trophies (Best Design, Most Original and Best Decorated) are presented to the winners and runners up in each age group.  The day gets underway at 9:00 AM with practice runs followed by the races at 10:00 AM. Hot Dogs, smokies, cold drinks and other goodies will be available to purchase. The Kiwanis Club of Brandon started the Kar Derby fund-raiser back in 1986. Rules and Entry forms can be found here.
