On March 30th at 4:38 a.m. an employee from a business located in the 1700 block of 18th Street North reported that there was a male actively trying to gain entry to the business by using tools to force the locked door at the back of the business. Police attended and located a 40-year-old-male on scene. Further investigation revealed that the male had also attempted to break into two other locked businesses in the area. The male was arrested and transported to Brandon Police Service detention cells, where he will be released via an Undertaking once sober. A court date has been set for June 15th, 2026.

Stolen Truck, Firearms Seized After Police Chase Leads to Four Arrests in Brandon

On March 27, 2026, at 10:15 AM, a BPS member attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a truck in the 1000 block of 26th Street and the vehicle fled from the officer westbound on Willowdale Crescent, and eventually on to 34th Street. Due to the amount of vehicle traffic at the time, the officer discontinued the traffic stop and officers searched the area for the truck. The initial investigation revealed that the truck had previously been stolen from a residence in the 400 block of 22nd Street and that the residence itself had been broken into. Numerous firearms and other property were found to have been stolen from within the home. At 11:33AM, officers located the stolen truck, unoccupied in the 2900 block of Rosser Avenue with numerous firearms and other stolen property in the vehicle. The Major Crime Section took carriage of the investigation with assistance from the Patrol Section, Forensic Identification Section, Organized Crime Section, Community Policing Section, and Police Dog Services Unit. Further investigation led to the identification of four suspects from the vehicle, three of whom were responsible for the Break and Enter the residence in the 400 block of 22nd Street. All four suspects were located and arrested at various addresses in the City of Brandon. On March 27th and 28th, the Major Crime Section executed search warrants at an address on Elvis Crescent and an address in the 1900 block of Queens Avenue, resulting in the recovery of large amounts of stolen property from the Break and Enter.   Kole Walker Blackbird, 28, of Keeseekoowenin was charged with numerous offences under the Criminal Code, including: Break and Enter to Steal Firearm Break and Enter and Commit Theft of Motor Vehicle Break and Enter and Commit Theft Over $5000 Weapons Trafficking x 3 Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized x 8 Careless Storage of a Firearm x 5 Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order x 8 Fail to Comply with Undertaking x 8 Flight from Peace Officer Blackbird was remanded into custody. Shyla Jayne McKay, 21, of Brandon was charged with numerous offences under the Criminal Code, including: Break and Enter to Steal Firearm Break and Enter and Commit Theft of Motor Vehicle Break and Enter and Commit Theft Over $5000 Weapons Trafficking x 3 Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm x 8 Careless Storage of a Firearm x 5 Fail to Comply with Release Order McKay was remanded into custody. Cashes Jay Alex Ducharme, 22, of Waywayseecappo was charged with numerous offences under the Criminal Code, including: Break and Enter to Steal Firearm Break and Enter and Commit Theft Over $5000 Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm x 5 Ducharme was remanded into custody. Xavierra Star Sunrise Cook, 23, of Brandon was charged with numerous offences under the Criminal Code, including: Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized x 5 Possession of a Firearm Contrary to a Prohibition Order x 5 Fail to Comply with a Probation Order x 5 Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Cook was remanded into custody. Break & Enters: A business in the 900 block 26th Street was broken into sometime overnight Thursday night into Friday morning, and five CPR mannequins were stolen. The matter is still under investigation. A residence in the 300 block 11th Street was broken into overnight Thursday / Friday as well, during which mukluks and crystals were stolen. The matter is still under investigation. A business in the 2400 Park Avenue was broken into overnight Thursday / Friday and numerous business related items were stolen. The matter is still under investigation. Arrest Warrants Executed: On Friday afternoon, a 24 year-old female was located at her Queens Avenue residence and taken into custody on the strength of a Warrant for Arrest for failing to comply with probation order. She was held in custody and will appear before the Court today. A 49 year-old male, from St Rose du Lac, was located at a Glendale Avenue residence on Friday afternoon and arrested for two counts of theft under $5000, which relate to two separate incidents that occurred at Princess Auto in Brandon. The accused was also found to be the subject of three warrants for arrest for theft under $5000, held by St. Rose detachment RCMP. The accused was processed and released on appropriate police imposed conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Court on June 8th . Just after 9:00 PM Friday evening, a 25 year-old male was arrested at a residence in the 600 block 11th Street when Police were called for a disturbance. A records query returned that the male was arrestable on the strength of a warrant for arrest for failing to comply with probation order.  As he was intoxicated at the time, he was held in custody, to be released once sober, and is scheduled to appear in Brandon provincial court on April 23rd. A 15 year-old male was arrested just after 4:00 AM Saturday morning when he was reported to be intoxicated and fighting with a sibling in the lobby of the Victoria Inn. It was found that he was wanted on a warrant for arrest for weapons and property offences and was brought into custody. He is to be released later today, and is scheduled to appear in Brandon provincial court on June 2nd. Also just after 4:00 AM Saturday morning, a 41 yar-old female was arrested in the 700 block Princess Avenue during a disturbance call during which a records query returned that she was the subject of a warrant for arrest for assault. She was intoxicated, was brought into custody, to be released later today, and is scheduled to appear in Brandon provincial court on April 13th. Assault With Weapon: At around 5:30 PM Friday, Police were made aware of an incident at a hotel in the 0-00 block 10th Street in which a female victim suffered stab wounds to her upper body. She was  transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. This matter remains under investigation. MVA With Injuries: Just after 5:00 PM Friday afternoon, Police attended to the intersection of a two vehicle collision at the intersection of PTH#100 and Richmond Avenue East. A female driver involved was transported to hospital for assessment and treatment of injuries resulting from the collision.  The male driver of the other vehicle involved was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act for disobeying a traffic control device. Assaults: At about 11:17 PM Police were called to a Goldfinch Crescent address for a report of an assault. A 72 year-old male was arrested for assault, and was later released on appropriate police imposed conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Court on June 4th.  The female victim of the assault did not require medical attention. A 27 year-old male was arrested at his residence in the 3700 block Victoria Avenue after police attended for a report of an assault. The female victim did not require medical attention and the accused was held in custody to appear before the Court later today. Others: Three people were brought into custody from separate incidents due to them being intoxicated from alcohol or drug, and causing a disturbance. They will be held until sober and released without charges.

BSD announces Assistant Superintendent – Curriculum & Human Resources

Brandon School Division Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Michelle  Sawa has been appointed Assistant Superintendent – Curriculum & Human  Resources of Brandon School Division, effective July 1, 2026. Michelle comes to Brandon School Division with more than seven   years of experience as a Senior Administrator, primarily serving as   a Superintendent in Ontario. She brings over 25 years of experience in K–12 education, including 15 years in leadership roles with a strong background in school administration.    Throughout her career with three different school boards in Ontario, Ms. Sawa has built strong, collaborative relationships with students, parents, principals, and staff at all levels. She has led the development of comprehensive K–12 Literacy Plans and worked closely with educators to analyze data and guide implementation based on evidence-informed practices. Ms. Sawa demonstrates a strong understanding of current educational trends and effectively integrates this knowledge into herleadership approach. Ms. Sawa’s education includes a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, a Bachelor of Education After Degree, a Bachelor of Education, and a Bachelor of Arts.
