Staggered Campground Bookings Resume April 5

Reservations for Manitoba campgrounds, cabins and group-use areas will begin on April 5 with staggered dates offered to make it easier for outdoor enthusiasts to book sites at their favourite campgrounds, Conservation and Climate Minister Sarah Guillemard announced today. “Our government thanks Manitobans for their commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic in acting on the advice our health-care experts to stay home for the benefits of themselves, their loved ones and their communities,” said Guillemard. “It is through their dedication and actions that we are able to allow Manitobans to continue to visit our provincial parks, and we are pleased to open our campgrounds for the season with additional safety measures in place. This will be welcome news for many Manitobans and their families. I encourage them to keep practising the fundamentals of good hygiene and social distancing at home and especially while enjoying quality time outside with their loved ones, whether camping, at cottages or throughout our beautiful parks.” To accommodate the expected high demand on April 5, the opening day of the parks reservation system, online and call centre services will begin at 7 a.m. at http://prs.gov.mb.ca, 204-948-3333 (in Winnipeg) and 1 888-482-2267 (toll free). Customers are advised to check the website for call centre hours on other days, and those making online reservations should check to confirm their user IDs and passwords prior to April 1. For more information, visit www.manitobaparks.com. The Manitoba parks reservation system will accept bookings in three phases:• April 5 at 7 a.m. – campsite reservations open for the Birds Hill Provincial Park campground;• April 7 at 7 a.m. – campsite reservations open for the Winnipeg Beach, Betula Lake, Big Whiteshell, Brereton Lake, Caddy Lake, Falcon Beach, Falcon Lakeshore, Nutimik Lake, Opapiskaw, Otter Falls, West Hawk Lake and White Lake campgrounds; and• April 12 at 7 a.m. – campsite reservations open for all remaining provincial park campgrounds. Park visitors will be familiar with many of the safety measures in effect, as the province continues to protect Manitobans while ensuring opportunities for outdoor activities. Campers are reminded to check for updates to the latest public health orders, such as those that limit outdoor gatherings to a maximum of 10 people, and to practise good hygiene and physical distancing. Provincial parks will once again employ enhanced cleaning procedures and sanitization of public washrooms and shower facilities. In addition, campers from southern Manitoba are reminded of a travel ban north of the 53rd parallel, with certain exceptions for essential travel. If booking sites at campgrounds anywhere north of Lake Winnipeg, campers should confirm the ban has been lifted before travelling there. Out-of-province campers and visitors, as well, must follow the public health orders for travel in Manitoba. Walk-in reservations and in-person payment arrangements can be made at 200 Saulteaux Cres. in Winnipeg, and will be available beginning April 5 Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the parks and facilities described above. Public access to the building is limited because of COVID-19 and may require lining up outside. Online or call-centre reservations are preferred. Manitobans are reminded that park vehicle passes will be available online in early April as part of the province’s e-licensing program. For more information on the e-licensing program or to purchase a park vehicle pass when the program launches this spring, visit www.manitobaelicensing.ca. Manitobans can stay up to date with provincial park news, activities and events by following Manitoba Parks on Facebook or Twitter at www.twitter.com/MBGovParks. (Province of MB News Release)

New BU Education program fills need for vocational teachers and rural schools

A new Education program at Brandon University (BU) will create opportunities for vocational teachers and add new flexibility that will help fill gaps at rural Manitoba schools. The Technical/Vocational Bachelor of Education program will begin in September 2021 and will be open to Manitoba teachers who have completed the Technical Vocational Teacher Education diploma at Red River College (RRC). Through the new BU program, they will gain the qualifications that they need to attain a Bachelor of Education degree and be fully certified to teach in the Kindergarten-to-Grade-12 system by the Province of Manitoba. “I am very excited at the prospect of returning to school,” said Crocus Plains automotive technology teacher Trent Sloane, who completed the vocational teacher education program at Red River College a decade ago. He said that although he wanted to further his education and finish his B.Ed., it wasn’t possible for him to travel to Winnipeg several times a week to attend evening classes. “I’m not alone in this,” Sloane said, “there are other vocational teachers in southwestern Manitoba who want to continue their education. The new B.Ed. program for vocational teachers at BU makes this possible and I’m thankful BU invested the time to get this program off the ground.” The technical education provided by the vocational programs are vital to schools and students, creating opportunities for students to develop skills that are in demand, enrich their high-school experience, and prepare for future careers or education. “This new program will expand the number of teachers available in high-demand subject areas like math and science in a shortened length of time,” said Wayne Ewasko, Manitoba’s Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration. “By providing technical vocational instructors with the tools and additional training to become certified teachers we are ensuring that regional demands and needs are met, further supporting student successes.” “This is an exciting announcement for the future of education in Manitoba,” said Cliff Cullen, Manitoba’s Minister of Education. “Rural Manitobans can take comfort knowing their local needs are being taken care of and their children will receive a quality education for their future success.” Many vocational teachers have backgrounds in trades and become certified to teach in K-12 schools through RRC’s Technical Vocational Teacher Education program. Because the teachers are only certified in their specific vocational area, school administrators are unable to fill their schedules with other subjects. The teachers may be forced to work a fragmented, part-time schedule, particularly in rural settings with smaller vocational programs. The new program at BU will allow these educators to develop a second teachable area based on their school division’s greatest need, in many cases mathematics and science. “Vocational teachers and administrators tell us that there is a strong demand for an accessible route in western Manitoba to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree,” said Dr. Heather Duncan, Dean of Education at BU. “We designed our Technical/Vocational B.Ed. program to be flexible and to be taken on a part-time basis. This will allow the teachers to continue to work at their current positions while gaining new skills that will advance their careers and bring versatility and efficiency to their school divisions.” In addition to their previous training, participants in the Technical/Vocational B.Ed. program will complete 60 credit hours at BU — the equivalent of two years of full-time study. Half of their courses at BU will be in Arts or Science disciplines, with the other half being Education courses and field experience.(Province of MB News Release)

Manitoba funds $12M for affordable housing in 10 municipalities, including Brandon

The Manitoba government is providing a total of $12 million in grant funding to 10 municipalities throughout the province to address the housing needs of vulnerable Manitobans and help protect them through affordable housing initiatives, Families Minister Rochelle Squires announced today. “The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us in one way or another and vulnerable Manitobans, including lower-income families, have been hit particularly hard,” said Squires. “This funding will enable and empower our municipal partners to help those who face barriers to housing in their communities, by supporting the creation of affordable housing and home ownership opportunities that will protect more families for years to come.” The municipalities receiving the funding are Brandon, Dauphin, Flin Flon, Morden, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, Steinbach, The Pas, Thompson and Winkler. Each of the 10 municipalities is to determine how to address best its objectives for housing affordability and development. The minister said this approach enables the municipalities to leverage additional sources of funding, if desired. The minister noted the federal government’s recently announced Rapid Housing Initiative has targeted funding to Winnipeg and Indigenous on-reserve communities only, and the new provincial funding aligns with current needs and represents a balanced approach to creating affordable housing opportunities.  The Manitoba government’s funding will benefit groups that are more likely to experience barriers to housing, such as Indigenous households, single-parent families and new Canadians, including refugees, as well as youth-led households, seniors and people with a physical or mental disability, and support them in achieving stable tenancies, the minister said.
