At around 2:00 Monday afternoon, Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and Brandon Police Service responded to a blaze in the Inland Kenworth business at 1240 Highland Ave, off of the TransCanada highway. Photo by Liam Pattison Photography When fire crews arrived there was considerable smoke coming from the garage portion of the building, with flames coming out of the overhead door space. Firefighters experienced water supply issues with the closest hydrant being frozen. The decision was made to close the TransCanada highway between 18th Street and 1st Street so that a hose could be connected to a hydrant across the road that wasn't frozen.  Photo by Liam Pattison Photography By the time a sustainable water source was established flames were roaring out of the building where the overhead doors used to be. Multiple significant explosions occurred at this time, sending yellow/green smoke billowing from the building.  Photo by Liam Pattison Photography Firefighters continued to battle the blaze with at least 6 fire hoses coming off of 1 fire truck. Brandon's Quint ladder truck was brought in to set up "master stream", but due to only 1 hydrant being available setting up the Quint wasn't possible, as there wasn't enough water pressure to supply both trucks.  Photo by Liam Pattison Photography Fire eventually moved into the office portion of the building which prompted firefighters to break glass in order to get water into that part of the building. As of 6:00pm the fire was still producing large clouds of smoke, and fire crews were still working to extinguish it. Source: Brandon Police Service Media Release On February 10, 2021, police responded to multiple reports of a male shooting a gun in the in the area of Baker Bay shortly after 6:00 pm.  Witnesses observed a male with a handgun running away from the area.  Police located and arrested the suspect within minutes.  He was still in possession of a CZ-74 handgun and ammunition.  Nobody was injured because of the shooting. An investigation into the incident revealed that the suspect confronted an individual with the gun, but the individual was able to enter their vehicle and drive away.  The suspect fired the gun towards the vehicle, striking it.  The driver of the vehicle lost control shortly after leaving the area and struck a tree.  The vehicle was towed for further investigation.  The suspect and the driver are not known to one another. The suspect, a 35-year-old male, was held in custody and appeared in court in the afternoon of February 11, 2021 on 14 firearm and weapon offences.  He has been remanded in custody. The Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation is launching a Chase the Ace fundraiser to support the Pumps for Life campaign. Pumps for life is gearing up to raise $900,000 to purchase new infusion pumps for the Brandon Regional Health Centre. An infusion pump allows health care staff to safely administer intravenous fluids required in patient care. These fluids can be medications, blood products, chemotherapy drugs, fluid replacement and nutrients, also known as tube feeding. Infusion pumps are used in all sectors of care – from laboring mothers to newborn babies in the NICU, from the surgical suite to the post-operative stage of care, from chemotherapy and hemodialysis treatments, to end of life care. This replacement project is necessary as the existing pumps are nearing the end of life. Replacing the pumps will also allow standardization of pumps across the Province of Manitoba. This allows for enhanced patient safety when moving between healthcare settings, as well, it allows for bulk buying and cost savings. A total of 360 infusion pumps are needed and we need your help to replace these lifesaving pieces of equipment. Patients across the entire healthcare spectrum will benefit from these new pumps. The success of a campaign like this is totally dependent on community support. Brandon School Division buses will not be operating outside the city of Brandon for Friday February 12th all day due to extreme cold; all Brandon School Division schools will be open; buses will be running within the city of Brandon; attendance at schools is at parental discretion where travel is required. On Tuesday afternoon, Brandon's emergency services responded to a crash between an SUV and a taxi near the Brandon Police Station.The crash at 11th Street and McTavish Ave sent an SUV plowing through a snowbank and up onto a sidewalk. The impact caused airbags to deploy in both vehicles, and fluids were leaking from the taxi.
