Source: Brandon Police Service Media Release At 3:34 a.m. today, a 34-year-old male from Brandon was the subject of a traffic stop in the downtown area. When police approached the vehicle, the male was attempting to conceal a conducted energy weapon (commonly referred to by the brand name TASER). He was removed from the vehicle and searched incidental to arrest. As a result officers recovered a second conducted energy weapon, cash, a substantial amount of crystal methamphetamine packaged in smaller amounts for resale, and a small amount of fentanyl.  The suspect was lodged in cells at BPS and will appear before a Justice today for a remand hearing. He is charged with two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, possession of proceeds of crime, and one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Manitoba Public Health officials advised Vincent Massey High School on October 30 of a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the grade 11 classes on Thursday, October 22. This case was not acquired at school. Vincent Massey High School is working closely with Public Health officials and following their recommendations. Based on the public health investigation, this exposure is assessed to be low risk. A thorough deep cleaning and disinfecting is taking place today and the school will be ready for staff on Monday/Tuesday and students on Wednesday. Please note: Vincent Massey High School and Brandon School Division are not permitted to release the name or any identifying information about the confirmed case of COVID-19 to any member of the school, parent, community or media. Brandon, MB – Brandon Fire & Emergency Services would like to remind the public when you set your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday, October 31st, REMEMBER to also install new batteries in your home’s smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. For smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to do their job, they need to have working batteries.  To survive a fire, you need to be provided with an early warning and know what to do when the smoke alarms sound. Working smoke alarms are required on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, it is recommended to also install smoke alarms inside all bedrooms. Carbon monoxide alarms are to be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.  Both types of alarms should be tested every month. Brandon, MB The City of Brandon Sanitation Section wishes to inform participants of its Green Cart Program that weekly pick-up for the year will conclude after Friday, November 6th.  Until then, participants are encouraged to have their compost carts placed out for collection no later than 6 a.m. on their scheduled day to ensure timely pick-up. As this time of year is often prone to a cycle of freeze-thaw temperatures, program participants are encouraged to place newspaper/cardboard at the bottom of their Green Cart to ensure materials release easily when being collected. Bagging yard waste in a compostable kraft paper bag is also a great option to ensure organic material does not stick! Weather-permitting, the City of Brandon Green Cart collection program will start up again in late-spring of 2021. However, Green Cart program participants are encouraged to continue placing all kitchen waste and other accepted organics into their Green Cart during the winter months.  More information about the voluntary Green Cart Program, including how to order your own Green Cart ahead of the 2021 season, can be found on the City of Brandon website or by calling 204-729-2281. Brandon, MB At 4:40 p.m. on October 21, 2020, the City of Brandon became aware that a private, internal Brandon Police Service (BPS) database containing information related to security cameras throughout the city was accidentally made available on the internet, via a mapping interface service. Within 15 minutes of city staff becoming aware of the exposure, online access to the dataset was removed.  BPS maintains a database of business and private residence security cameras that BPS is aware of, in order to assist with investigations. This information is kept in strict confidence and was never intended to be publicly available.   Data contained in this dataset may include items, such as:  ·         Street Address  ·         Physical location of security cameras  ·         Vantage point of security cameras  ·         Business name  ·         Contact details, such as name or phone number  Not all records contained all the above information.   Under further investigation, the ability to access this information was available for 5 days from the afternoon of Friday, October 16, 2020 till Wednesday, October 21, 2020. From our internal review, only the individual who brought it to our attention, accessed the map information.  It is important to emphasize that neither BPS or the City have access to any private camera images or videos feeds without the owners granting access.  In accordance with The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the City has reported this situation to the Manitoba Ombudsman.  In an effort to be transparent and demonstrate the City of Brandon’s commitment to protecting the privacy of citizens, all individuals affected are being notified by mail.  (City of Brandon PSA)
