On February 15, 2024, Madison ENGELBRETSON was sentenced to a Supervised Probation Order with several mandated conditions. ENGELBRETSON on several occasions failed to comply with the conditions on her Probation Order, therefore a warrant of arrest has been issued. ************************************* CRIME OF THE WEEK for April 17th, 2025 The Brandon Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in solving a Theft Under $5000. On April 14th, 2025, a female entered a business located in the 900 block of Victoria Avenue. The female was caught on video surveillance stealing merchandise and fled prior to police arrival. State of the City 2025: It’s All About Collaboration, Sustainability, and Core Services

Mayor Jeff Fawcett delivered the State of the City address today at the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, detailing the progress and future plans. Mayor Fawcett emphasized the significance of collaboration and partnership in achieving the city's objectives. He underscored the unique spirit of Brandon and expressed his pride as Mayor, driven by the enthusiasm of residents, dedication of local business owners, and community energy. Sustainability  The City's commitment to sustainability remains paramount, emphasizing the necessity of making informed decisions today to ensure a healthier, more resilient city for future generations. He highlighted progress made during the first half of his term as mayor, including securing unprecedented federal and provincial funding, approving nearly 300 new residential units valued at $58 million, and achieving an overall construction value exceeding $123 million in 2024. Property Taxes Regarding property taxes, Mayor Fawcett acknowledged the challenges faced by residents and outlined the city's strategic approach to reducing taxes through a new four-year budget. He stressed the importance of lobbying for government funds and highlighted the national recognition Brandon is receiving for its efforts in affordable housing. Safety   Safety is a significant issue that affects both the community and business owners, influencing perceptions of Brandon. He addressed these concerns, commending Police Chief Tyler Bates' leadership and collaboration with social services agencies. In coordination with Mayor Sharilyn Knox of Portage and other Manitoba municipalities, there is a call for stronger bail reform. Efforts include writing letters and amplifying voices to advocate for immediate measures to keep violent repeat offenders off the streets. Downtown Development  Mayor Fawcett remarked on downtown development progress, including the Wheat City Pickleball and Tennis project and the acquisition of federal funds for housing initiatives. He urged the City Council to approve new market housing units downtown to foster a thriving living and working environment. Grow Brandon  The Grow Brandon partnership was initiated last year to unite entities such as the Chamber, the City, Assiniboine College, Brandon University, provincial and federal governments, Business Council of Manitoba, and Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, among other partners, all aimed at advancing economic development. Population Growth  Addressing misconceptions about Brandon's population, Mayor Fawcett noted the city's growth and the approaching milestone of 60,000 residents. He emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and shared details of significant investments made by Cascadia Metals. Urban Development  The Mayor highlighted the work being done in urban development projects, including southwest wastewater servicing and Brandon Transit system refurbishment, highlighting the City's focus on core services and infrastructure. In conclusion, Mayor Fawcett reiterated the City's commitment to becoming the best place to work, filling 150 vacant positions and enhancing the workplace through employee feedback. He called on the community to invest in local businesses, advocate for development, volunteer, run for office, and collaborate to shape Brandon's future. Man Arrested After Assaulting Security Guard, Violating Probation at Town Centre

Assault / Failure to Comply Probation On April 15th at 5:18PM police members were waved down regarding an assault in the 800 block of Rosser Avenue. A Town Centre security officer had his phone taken by a male who attempted to break it. The male then proceeded to grab the security officer’s jacket. The male was arrested and found to be on a Probation Order not to attend the Town Centre. He was released on an Undertaking with a court date of June 9th, 2025. Structure Fire On April 15th at 12:55PM a 911 call of a garage fire in the 200 block of 5th Street came in. Members attended, alongside Brandon Fire and Emergency Services (BFES), and found the garage was fully engulfed. Residents in the area evacuated as a precaution. A vehicle across the back lane sustained some minor melting to a rear light. No injuries. The fire remains under investigation with BFES.  

Man Arrested After Confrontation with Police Outside 18th Street Business

Resist Arrest/Carry Concealed Weapon/ Possession of a Weapon On April 15th at 2:25AM Paladin Security requested police attend the 600 block of 18th Street to assist in removing two individuals who were refusing to leave the entrance of a business. A 23-year-old male attempted to fight police, resisted arrest and was found to have a knife. The male was arrested, held in detention cells and will attend court in the morning on April 15th, 2025.  Additional tickets of Trespass and Smoke in a Public Place were given. Theft Under $5000 On April 14th at 11:50AM a business in the 900 block of Victoria Avenue called BPS to inform of a theft that just occurred. Members attended and located the 38-year-old female outside of the store. The $37 worth of merchandise was returned. The female was released on an Undertaking with a court date of June 23rd, 2025.

Manitoba Government Invests $20.3 Million in Roads to Connect Rural Manitobans in Minnedosa

The Manitoba government will invest $20.3 million to reconstruct provincial trunk highways (PTH) 10 and 16 near Minnedosa to support rural Manitobans, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced today. “Road investments are vital to support rural and northern Manitoba’s economy and these upgrades will support Minnedosa’s economy as the community continues to grow,” said Naylor. “These repaved highways will allow residents to grow their businesses as they welcome more visitors and create infrastructure that can support future economic growth.” A key commerce route in southwest Manitoba, PTH 10 will receive new bituminous pavement between PTH 1 and PTH 25 and between the south junction of PTH 16 and the north junction of PTH 16. There will also be new bituminous pavement for Minnedosa’s rest stop at the north junction of PTH 16. These projects will renew approximately 22.1 kilometres of highway, with work anticipated to begin in spring 2025, noted the minister. Surface improvements are also planned on PTH 10 between PTH 24 and the south junction of PTH 16, and on PTH 16 from PR 250 to PTH 10. “Safety is a priority for our government,” said Naylor. “These new road investments will allow a smoother and safer journey for residents, and a repaved rest stop will ensure motorists can safely take breaks so every person is able to get to their destination safely.” This work in the Minnedosa area supports Manitoba’s Multi-year Infrastructure Investment Strategy, which outlines planned strategic investments in roads, highways, bridges, airports and flood protection over the next five years in Manitoba, noted the minister.
