Brandon City Council Approves Water Rate Hike to Address Utility Deficit

Brandon City Council approved revised water and wastewater rates to recover the 2023 water utility deficit, as per the Public Utilities Board (PUB) Order No.42/25 . The amendment was passed on May 5, 2025, ensuring compliance with the PUB order and supporting the financial health of Brandon's Water and Wastewater Utility. More details can be found in this City Council Report. These rates, effective from April 1, 2025, will address the deficit via a $0.064 per cubic meter rate rider over a duration of 5 years and 6 months, concluding in 2030. The revised rate will be reflected on customers’ utility invoices starting this month. The approved rate will result in an increase in the rider recovery from 22.3 cents to 28.7 cents. For an average family of four, consuming 46 cubic meters per quarter, this adjustment translates to an additional $11.78 (1.1%) on the annual water bill, or an increase of $0.99 on their monthly plan. To help residents in managing these costs, the City recommends enrolling in monthly water billing, which offers a 20% discount on the administrative service charge. Additionally, the City of Brandon encourages water and wastewater customers to register for electronic invoices to ensure timely receipt of invoices and avoid any potential disruptions or delays in mail delivery. To enroll in the monthly water payment plan or register for electronic invoices, please visit onlineservices.brandon.ca/updateinfo.aspx. More information on water billing can be found at brandon.ca/water-billing-utilities.
