Brandon, MB May 21, 2019 - Daly House Museum is pleased to present The U.S. National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibition, “Pictures of Nursing: The Zwerdling Postcard Collection.” This six-banner exhibit highlights pieces of unique collection of nearly 2,600 postcards from around the world that depict nurses and the nursing professions.
“This unique archive consists of postcards with images of nurses and the nursing profession from around the world, produced between 1893 and 2011 with many examples coming from the Golden Age of postcards –roughly 1907 to 1920,” says the U.S. National Library of Medicine website. “These images of nurses and nursing are informed by cultural values; ideas about women, men and work; and attitudes towards class, race, and national differences. By documenting the relationship of nursing to significant forces in 20th century life, such as war and disease, these postcards reveal how nursing was seen during those times.”
Subject explored by the exhibit include the religious and cultural origins of nursing, the historical status of nursing as a career, the gender dynamics of the profession, and the artistic representation of nurses throughout the 20th Century.
The Daly House Museum has also added a special edition to the exhibit that focuses on history of nursing and the nursing profession in Canada. The edition focuses on the heritage of nursing within Canada and the experiences of local nurses at Brandon General Hospital and the Brandon Mental Health Centre. The exhibit will be on display until June 22 in Daly House Museum’s rotating exhibition gallery.
