City of Brandon Skating Oval to open shortly

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Community Services Department is pleased to advise the public that Brandon’s outdoor skating oval located immediately west of the Parks Complex on McGregor Avenue will officially open for the winter season as of 4 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, December 14th.  Hours of operation at the oval will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. through the course of the winter season, weather-permitting. The oval is developed each year by Community Services staff and provides for warming shacks, portable washroom facilities, flood lighting, ambient music, and fire pits to cook on or warm up around. In addition, the Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Waterfall of Lights is also lit until 11 p.m. each evening so the public can skate around the oval and take in the brilliant, festive displays. The public should note that while use of the skating oval is FREE, it is unsupervised, with no sticks, pucks or pets allowed on the ice surface. The public is encouraged to park in designated areas on McGregor Avenue or Hilton Avenue, as NO public vehicles are allowed in the direct area of the Power Smart Waterfall of Lights display or the skating oval. Community Services staff are also very excited to be working with the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier Organizing Committee to craft a “Jam Pail Curling” ice surface in an area just north of the skating oval’s Hilton Avenue parking lot. The curling sheet, measuring 50 feet long by 14 feet wide, should be ready for play by Friday, December 21st. The public is asked to respect that work is still ongoing to prepare this unique sheet of ice for community use and to refrain from playing on it at this time. For more information on public winter activities provided by the City of Brandon’s Community Services Department, call 204-729-2148.

Local photographers create amazing calendars from area photos

Two local photographers (Caley Brown, Liam Pattison) have both recently released a calendar for 2019 which highlights their respective resume of work. Caley Brown said that she decided to release a calendar of her work after receiving numerous requests from people suggesting that she make a calendar.   She has a passion for capturing the beauty of our area which is featured prominently throughout her calendar.   According to Caley, the toughest part about putting together a calendar is narrowing down the photos to just 12 as there is so many beautiful sights in this area. The 8.5” x 11” calendar is only $25 (cash only) and is available for pickup at Avelle (761-18th Street) anytime Monday- Friday between 10am and 4pm.  The calendar is also available in Carberry at Accenting Styles.  It should also be noted that Caley intends to also publish a table-top book of her work in the not too distant future. 2019 Emergency Photography Calendar by Liam Pattison Like Caley, Liam said his idea to make a calendar came from his family and friends who suggested the concept and he quite liked the idea of producing a calendar featuring some of his work.  According to Liam "There are not many people who do what I do, especially locally, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to try something new, and see how my followers reacted to the idea of a calendar."  He tried to incorporate as many different types and styles of photos as possible of Brandon's emergency services, as well as from the Rivers/Daly Fire Department, Oakland/Wawanesa Fire Department, CFB Shilo Fire Department, MacGregor Fire Department, Whitehead Fire Department and Winnipeg Fire Department.  Most of the photos were taken on-scene of emergencies, or while a truck was sitting in it's fire hall. Liam's calendar can be purchased by contacting him directly on his Facebook page or by emailing him at pattypattison@gmail.com.  The calendars are priced at $22 for local people. For people who need the calendars to be shipped to them, the price of shipping will be added onto the original price. Liam would also like to thank our first responders; firefighters (volunteer and paid), paramedics, police officers, 911 dispatchers/call takers, and the great nurses/doctors at the end of the line for the work they put in daily.
