Local Companies to Participate in Take Our Kids to Work Day

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, approximately 652 Brandon School Division Grade 9 students will job shadow a parent, relative, friend or community host as part of The Learning Partnership’s Take Our Kids to Work Day. The program supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work, and their own futures by providing them with an opportunity to experience and learn about the world of work as they begin to explore possible career paths and imagine the possibilities! Over 216 local businesses and organizations will be hosting BSD students. While most students will spend the day with one of their parents, a number of businesses and individuals have volunteered to host students looking for a new experience. Safety is an important topic and as part of the pre-day preparations for this event, Grade 9 students in the Brandon School Division will have participated in a Workplace Safety and Health presentation delivered by the SAFE Workers of Tomorrow organization. This year SAFE Work Manitoba provided 20 toques to participating schools to distribute to students to promote SAFE work. This year, Career Education has created a brand-new community host called Exploring Your Future for students who might not have a connection to stay with for the day. The agenda will consist of a panel of seven business professionals who will answer questions about their first job and post-secondary schooling. In the afternoon CEYS will present the importance of a good resume and proper dress code and the Healthy Living Facilitator from the City of Brandon will take the students through a stress management session. The following sites will be hosting 5 or more Brandon School Division Grade 9 students: Assiniboine Community College; Brandon Police Service; Brandon School Division; CFB Shilo; KOCH Fertilizers; Maple Leaf Pork; Prairie Mountain Health.

Province Honours Canadian Indigenous Veterans

Indigenous and Northern Relations Minister Eileen Clarke today acknowledged Indigenous veterans who served Canada during times of war and international conflict as well as in peacetime. “Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to spend time with some of Manitoba’s Indigenous veterans,” said Clarke.  “It was truly a privilege to meet these heroes, and listen to their stories of courage and determination.  There are no words to adequately describe the gratitude we owe for the contributions and achievements of those who have served and continue to serve our country.” Manitoba was the first province to recognize National Aboriginal Veterans Day on Nov. 8, 1994.  Now recognized across Canada, commemorations and ceremonies take place to honour the estimated 12,000 Indigenous people who served in the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War. Serving with honour and distinction in all branches of the Armed Forces, many endured additional challenges such as cultural differences and language barriers.  Despite these challenges, the valuable skills they brought from their traditions made them excellent sailors, pilots and soldiers. Indigenous women also contributed overseas, often as nurses, while the women at home supported war efforts by helping raise money and aiding in the manufacturing of key materials and supplies required by Canadian troops. “I ask all Manitobans never to forget the many Indigenous men and women who sacrificed their lives so that all Canadians might live a life of peace and freedom,” said Clarke.

Manitoba Commemorates 100th Anniversary of the End of the First World War

The Manitoba government will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War with a number of special events and an open house at the Archives of Manitoba, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Cathy Cox announced today. “We must honour these important milestones in our history,” Cox said.  “By remembering the past, we are reminded of the need for all of us to work toward a better future.” When the Armistice was signed on Nov. 11, 1918, it ended four years of fighting that saw more than 650,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders serving.  Over 170,000 soldiers were wounded and 66,000 were killed. The Archives of Manitoba has a number of events to commemorate the centenary of the First World War including a display at the archives.  At 7 p.m. on Nov. 8, a special dramatic reading from the letters and diaries of Manitoba soldiers will be read by students from École Secondaire Kelvin High School.  The archives is hosting an open house for two days, Nov. 9 and 10, between noon and 4 p.m., featuring a display of records related to the experience of Manitobans at home and overseas. In addition, the Legislative Library is participating with an exhibit titled ‘As the War Ends:  Manitoba Newspapers Recount the Last Days’ with century-old newspapers from the time of Armistice on display near the Grand Staircase at the Legislative Building until Nov. 13. More information on the events around the centenary of the Armistice is available at www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/.
