Manitoba Government Keeping Rent Affordable in Westman Region

The Manitoba government is investing in the maintenance of affordable housing in the Westman region, Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith announced here today. “Our government has a goal to end chronic homelessness in Manitoba and to do that, we not only need to build more affordable housing but also invest in the units we already have,” said Smith. “These repairs will keep housing affordable for families and seniors in Westman.” The province will invest an additional $500,000 in Brandon’s Spruce Woods Housing Co-Op located at 30 Braecrest Dr., which offers affordable housing to low-income families and seniors. The funds will be used to help get much-needed repairs to the 81-unit facility, which has been in operation for almost 40 years, the minister noted. “We are not only a co-op that provides affordable housing, we are a community that helps each other,” said Eva Cameron, manager, Spruce Woods Housing Co-op. “By being able to provide affordable housing, it allows our seniors to live with dignity, it helps our families to be able to afford feeding their children and, in many cases, it has helped families save enough money for the down payment on their very first home.” The Spruce Woods Housing Co-op also receives over $14,000 monthly to support operations through the Manitoba government’s Non-Profit Housing Funding Model. The Manitoba Integrated Law Enforcement Team (MILET) has arrested and charged 2 individuals with Possession for the purpose of trafficking drugs during a traffic stop near Virden. They were in possession of a quantity of drugs believed to be cocaine and methamphetamine. In April 2025, MILET began a drug investigation involving individuals from Souris, Manitoba.
