Structure fire north-west of Wawanesa

Shortly after 5:40pm this evening, Oakland/Wawanesa Fire Department along with Green Acres Hutterite Colony responded to a structure fire north-west of Wawanesa off of Highway 453. Fire crews arrived to find a machine shed structure fully involved with fire, along with some grass/brush on fire in the area. Fire crews were able to put the brush fire out without it extending to any other structures, and contain the fire in the machine shed to the structure itself. A porta-tank was set up so that a pumper could draft water into hoses for firefighters. Oakland/Wawanesa Fire Department, Green Acres Hutterite Colony, RCMP, Office of the Fire Commissioner and Manitoba Hydro attended the scene.

BPS seize semi-automatic rifle, cash, and drugs

Brandon Police Service Media Release As a result of an ongoing investigation, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Police took a male into custody after observing him leave a residence in the 100 Block of Frederick Street on foot.  A short time later, a female left the residence and drove away in a vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle and the female was taken into custody. A Search Warrant was then executed on the residence, which recovered an SKS Rifle, three airsoft pellet handguns, approximately 28 grams of cocaine and $1000 cash. The 48-year-old man is bound by a Recognizance with conditions to not have any contact with the female, to not possess Firearms and to reside at an address in Lenore Manitoba. The man was arrested for Possession of a Firearm contrary to a Prohibition Order, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Unsafe Storage of a Firearm, Unsafe Storage of Ammunition, Breach of Recognizance, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine and Possession of Proceeds of Crime. The 31-year-old female was arrested for the same firearm and drug offences but was also found to be in possession of a small amount of Methamphetamine. Both suspects are residents of the home and both were held in custody, scheduled to appear in Court on Wednesday.

Manitoba ORFF Chapter Children’s Day 2018

This week, grade five students and their music teachers from the Westman and Parkland regions and into Saskatchewan will come together for a day of creative music making at Orff Children’s Day 2018. This fun-filled and musically enriching event will take place at the School of Music at Brandon University from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Children’s Day, sponsored by the Manitoba Orff Chapter, will feature five excellent clinicians. Under the leadership of these experts, students will take part in various workshops integrating choral singing, recorder, movement, and ensemble playing on drums and Orff instruments. The chosen theme is "Back to the Future – An Intergalactic Exploration”. The day's activities will culminate in a sharing session presented by all participating students from 3:00-3:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Students were selected to represent their individual schools at this fantastic event. Together with their music teachers, they look forward to taking part in exciting new musical experiences to bring back to their peers.

Man arrested for allegedly driving drunk with 2 kids in the vehicle

Brandon Police Service Media Release At approximately 6:05 p.m., Police conducted a traffic stop in the 400 Block of 6th Street on a vehicle with no license plates and 5 occupants. The male driver of the vehicle displayed signs of being impaired and was transported to the Police Service where breath samples obtained were in excess of double the legal limit. The 23-year-old man was arrested for Impaired Driving and Drive Over 80 mg%. He was lodged at the Brandon Correctional Center and is scheduled to appear in Court on Tuesday. An intoxicated 18-year-old male passenger in the vehicle was issued a ticket for having open liquor in a vehicle. He was released from Police custody. An intoxicated 24-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was arrested for Breach of the Peace and lodged at the Correctional Center. Her two children, ages 8 and 2 were also passengers in the vehicle and were turned over to Child and Family Services as there was no sober responsible adult available to care for them.
