Police: Woman arrested after attacking victim with machete

At 10:49 pm on February 9th, Police were called to a potential weapon call in the area of the 1200 block of 9th St. Through further investigation, it was determined that a 22 year old female had forced her way into a residence in the 1200 block of 10th St and assaulted a 21 year old male. The female struck the victim multiple times in the arm with a machete causing the male to require medical attention for the non-life threatening injuries. The female also discharged a can of bear spray while inside the residence. The suspect was arrested and held for court. She was charged with break and enter and commit, two counts of assault with a weapon, and two counts of possession of a weapon.

Police investigate armed robbery in Brandon

On February 9, 2024, at 9:33pm, police were dispatched to a robbery that had just occurred at a business in the 2000 block of Lyndale Drive.  Police attended and learned that 2 suspects had entered the business and had stolen goods and money.  At the time of the incident, the suspects were armed with a BB gun and large knife.  During the robbery, one of the suspects discharged the BB gun several times at the business employee, striking him in the upper body.  The employee also sustained an injury to his hand as a result of being cut by one of the suspects who was armed with the knife.  Police were unable to locate the suspects at the time.  Police continue to investigate.  No other details will be released at this time.

SVDN signs Casino Project MOU

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Chief Vince Tacan held a brief gathering to announce that an MOU (memorandum of Understanding) has been signed with Dakota communities Canupawakpa Dakota Nation and Dakota Plains First Nation regarding a new casino project. The Casino Project MOU laid out each communities involvement and responsibilities moving forward. Chief Vince Tacan (SVDN), Chief Brown (Canupawakpa) and Chief Don Smoke (Dakota Plains) joined through Zoom to discuss the project. The plan is to implement the undertaking in phases starting with a hotel/casino and conference centre. The proposed location for the development is near the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 21 (Petro-Canada). The full announcement is posted below.

Local taxi driver assaulted, cab stolen

On 2024-02-08 at 2141 hrs, police responded to the 1000 block of 18th Street as a taxi driver reported his fare had assaulted him and stolen his taxi.  Police investigation resulted in learning that the driver had initially picked up the fare from a residence in the 700 block of 11th Street.  While driving the suspect began to assault the driver, whereby the driver pulled into a nearby parking lot and abandoned the vehicle in the 1000 block of 18th Street.  The suspect then proceeded to get into the driver’s seat and drove away.  No injuries were sustained by the cab driver and a vehicle GPS system within the cab guided police to the 300 block of 15th Street where the stolen vehicle was found unoccupied. Footprints in the snow leading away from the vehicle resulted in locating a 43-year-old male suspect hiding in a yard nearby. The accused was arrested without incident for Robbery with Violence, Theft of Motor Vehicle and Drive while Disqualified.  A check of police records also revealed that the suspect was responsible for an armed robbery of an individual on the evening of 2024-01-30.  On this occasion two suspects wearing masks, came to the door of an apartment in the 200 block of 15th Street.  The door was answered by the resident, whereby the victim was struck in the head with a machete.  The 49-year-old male victim was transported to the hospital and received treatment for his injuries.  On 2024-01-21.  A 17-year-old female co-accused was arrested and held for court. The 43-year-old male suspect will appear in court 2024-02-09 for charges stemming from both incidents for the offences of Robbery with Violence X2, Theft of Motor Vehicle, and Drive While Disqualified.

Accused shoplifter apprehended, found carrying a machete

On February 7th, 2024, at 6:29 pm a business in the 1500 block of 18th street called to report a male had stolen a hoodie and fled. The incident was caught on video surveillance. Police later located the accused, and he was arrested. He was found to have 6-inch machete on his person. He was held for court on February 8th, 2024.
