On January 14th at 09:39 a.m. Police were called for a structure fire to an abandoned detached garage in the 200 block of Lyndale Drive. The fire appeared suspicious, and police located a male hiding in the area. The 34-year-old male had black smoke on his hands and face. He was arrested for arson and held for court on January 15th, 2024.

At approx. 1:10 PM Friday, officers were called to an address in the 1200 block of 10th St (not the same address from previous entry), as there was a male in the residence on a Probation Order with a condition that he not communication with the caller.  Members attended and were met by a 17 year old female who was not cooperative.  The officers spoke to the original caller who stated the subject of her concern, 37 year old male, was still there and was hiding in another room. The 17 year old female then started to assault the caller and an officer stepped in.  The officer was struck several times in the face and throat by the 17 year old female. While this occurred the male was located hiding in a closet off the kitchen.  That male then attempted to obstruct the first officer’s ability in taking the 17 year old into custody.  Additional officers responded to the call as there were other people in the residence not yet controlled.  The 37 year old male was arrested for obstruct peace officer and two counts of failing to comply with a Probation Order.  The 17 year old female was arrested for assault, assault peace officer and resist arrest.  Both subjects are being held at the Brandon Police Service awaiting a court appearance later this morning.

On January 11th, 2024, at 11:52 pm Police came upon an accident in the 900 block of Richmond Avenue. The driver of the vehicle had struck a parked car. The driver, a 21-year-old male was arrested for impaired driving. He provided samples of his breath that were almost three times the legal limit. He was released once sober and set for court on January 18th, 2024.

The City of Brandon is releasing the 2024 proposed municipal budget. The municipal budget is written by city staff, then debated, amended and passed by City Council. Brandon City Council will deliberate the 2024 proposed budget as prepared by City administration on Friday, February 2, 2024, and Saturday, February 3, 2024. Deliberations will be held in the City of Brandon Council Chamber on the 2nd floor of Brandon City Hall and are open to the public and media to observe. The deliberations will also be livestreamed via the City of Brandon YouTube channel .  Westman Communications Group TV (WCGtv) will also be live streaming this event on channel 12 or online at westmancom.com/personal/wcgtv/watch-live. The 2024 proposed budget will require an additional $5.3 million in municipal taxes levied. That would require an 11.2 per cent increase in revenue, which for an average tax bill could be a 10% increase in the municipal portion of their tax bill from last year. The proposed combined general and utility budgets are $137.8 million. The proposed capital plan is $125.1 million, which includes $35.9 million in Federal and Provincial grant funding. Major projects from the proposed capital budget includes: $24.7 million for the water treatment facility expansion $13.3 million for land drainage improvements, including the Southeast Drainage Project $21.3 million for new wastewater sewers, including the Southwest Wastewater Servicing Project $10.0 million for the multi-year construction of the Outdoor Sports Field Complex. Some of this spending may be done in future years. In addition to already approved and underway multi-year projects, some of the projects being proposed in 2024 include: $4.4 million for design and construction of area and ice plant upgrades at the Brandon Community Sportsplex $3.6 million for renewal of Brandon Transit and Brandon Access Transit fleet $525,000 for the detailed design of intersection improvements at 18th St N & Braecrest Dr $800,000 for the completion of a new landfill cell A $6.7-million increase to salary expenses reflects the creation of new positions at the City of Brandon, some of which will be recovered by grants from other levels of government, including 15 paramedic positions fully funded by Shared Health; as well as 14 police positions including two additional community cadets funded in part with the provincial urban policing grant. This increase also includes the city’s focus on filling critical positions that were vacant for portions of 2023. Other notable items in the proposed operating budget include increased funding for infrastructure renewal, downtown initiatives, enhanced industry attraction efforts, the completion of Brandon Transit’s long-term strategy and route planning study, and the implementation of the community safety & wellbeing plan. The City of Brandon has attracted a record amount of provincial funding to support Brandon and mitigate the costs for local ratepayers. That includes: $1.9 million from Shared Health which funds ten paramedics for a third ambulance and five paramedics to work in the new police cells, which will mitigate the burden on the hospital emergency room $319,000 for an expanded police Community Cadet program to enhance policing, especially downtown More on-the-ground policing and bylaw enforcement Enhanced environmental initiatives and commitment to affordable housing “Our budget includes transfer payments from the provincial and federal government”, says City Manager Ron Bowles. “We are continuing to lobby our provincial government for additional funding so that Brandon and other municipalities across our province have their fair share.” All proposed budget documents can be viewed on the City of Brandon website at brandon.ca/budget/proposed-2024-budget. On January 8th, 2024 a 16-year-old female was charged for an assault on another 16- year old female that occurred at a business in the 300 block of 8th street. The assault had occurred on May 15th , 2023 and videos had been circulating on social media. Police were finally able to identify the accused. She was arrested and released for court on March 19th, 2024.
