Brazen thief steals purse from Brandon business

On September 19, 2023, at approximately 1:00 pm, police responded to a report of the theft of a purse from a business in the 1600 block of park Ave.  The female suspect then used a credit card from the purse to pay for a cab ride.  The 32-year-old female was later located and arrested.  She was still in possession of some of the stolen property, and she was also in possession of a knife.  She was later released to appear in court on November 30, 2023, on charges of Theft Under $5000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Fraud X2, and Possession of a Weapon.

City of Brandon Welcomes New General Manager of Corporate Services

The City of Brandon is pleased to announce the newest member of our executive team and General Manager of Corporate Services/Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Cory Schermann, City Manager Ron Bowles has announced. “As the City progresses on a path towards fiscal sustainability and robust infrastructure planning, Cory will be integral in helping our organization navigate change,” says city manager Ron Bowles. “Cory has a proven track record in strategic planning, financial management and team leadership with the Province of Saskatchewan and the Province of Alberta where he held progressive leadership roles since 2003.” In addition to being the CFO, Schermann will oversee the City of Brandon’s Corporate Services Division, which includes the Finance, Human Resources, Legislative Services, and Innovation, Technology & Communications departments. He has a post-secondary Bachelor of Business Administration degree and holds a Chartered Professional Accounting designation. “I am honoured to be joining the City of Brandon as the General Manager of Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer,” states Cory Schermann. “It is a privilege to be part of a team that is committed to fiscal sustainability and community development. My family and I are excited to be relocating to this wonderful community, and we look forward to contributing to its prosperity and growth.” Schermann will join the organization on October 3, 2023 and will work out of City Hall, 410 – 9th Street.

Trio charged after police recover meth, cocaine

At approx. 10:40 PM Saturday, members of the Organized Crime Section, Patrol and the K9 Unit, executed a CDSA search warrant at a residence in the 1200 block of 6th ST. A 61 year old male and a 34 year old female were immediately taken into custody within the residence.  While the search was being conducted, a 43 year old female returned to the residence and was also taken into custody. The search recovered a quantity of Cocaine, Meth, $600 cash as well as drug trafficking related paraphernalia. The street value of the drugs seized is approx. $20,000. The male and the 34 year old female are both currently under release conditions which they were failing to adhere to, with the possession of these drugs. They are both charged for possession of meth and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and failing to comply with an Undertaking. They will be held in custody for court later today. The 43 year old female has been released with a court date of December 14, for the charges of possession of meth and cocaine, for the purpose of trafficking.

Break and Enter/Possession of a Weapon

On 2023-09-14 at 1910 hrs, police received a report of a Break and Enter prior to an apartment located in the 300 block of 16th Street.  Upon police attending the location the individual reporting the complaint was found to have left prior to police arrival.  While police were in the area a second report was received at 2132 hrs from a homeowner residing in the 200 block of 16th Street regarding a break and enter in progress.  An unknown male suspect had entered the home through the unlocked front door and proceeded into the basement while armed with a kitchen knife.  Police were immediately on scene and arrested the individual without incident.  No injuries were sustained to any of the involved parties and the suspect was determined to be intoxicated and hallucinating from methamphetamine.  Furthermore, police determined the arrested individual to be the same person that had reported the break and enter prior to his residence in the 300 block of 16th.  A 39-year-old male was lodged at BPS and will appear before the court 2023-08-15 for the charges of Possession of a Weapon Dangerous and Break and Enter.

New Northbound Daly Bridge Now Open

he new northbound bridge structure is now open to traffic. This bridge will accommodate one lane in each travel direction while the southbound bridge structure is being constructed.    Please note the following, as it relates to construction activities on 18th St. N between Princess Ave. and Parker Blvd. / Hilton Ave.:  Fred Brown Way will be closed from 18th St. N to 19th St. N  The east leg of Pacific Ave., including the under-bridge loop, will reopen to traffic, with the west leg of Pacific Ave. closed to accommodate construction  Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times, with temporary access provided as required during construction  The new multi-use pathway and bridge structure will be open to accommodate active transportation (pedestrians, etc.) throughout the project
