City of Brandon Release Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Development Services Division wishes to inform the public that demolition will soon begin on the decommissioned 8th Street Bridge structure. As such, all public access to the bridge WILL BE STRICTLY PROHIBITED as of the morning of Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017. The demolition project’s contractor has confirmed site work will begin on Tuesday, May 23rd and will include the staging of equipment, preparation of temporary structures and the securing of all access points leading to the bridge structure. This will also include closing Assiniboine Avenue and the lane north of Assiniboine Avenue between 8th Street North and 9th Street North for the duration of the demolition project. It is anticipated that the physical work of dismantling the bridge will begin on Monday, May 29th. Pedestrians or bicyclists currently use the bridge structure to travel to and from the downtown area are encouraged to begin using alternate routes of travel PRIOR TO Tuesday, May 23rd to avoid risk to personal safety or potential apprehension for trespassing. Individuals found to be accessing the bridge structure or any of its secured areas after Tuesday, May 23rd will be charged with trespassing, which carries a fine and possible prosecution. In addition, officials with Canadian Pacific Railway will be patrolling the areas along Pacific Avenue and Stickney Avenue to ensure pedestrians are not unlawfully crossing its track system anywhere other than at established access points. At this time, it is NOT anticipated that residents or businesses near the demolition site will need to vacate their property at any point during the demolition process. The City of Brandon and the project contractor will also be working with Canadian Pacific Railway officials to ensure minimal impact to railway operations for the duration of the project. The public will be notified of any other short-term road closures that may be required during the project. Regular Brandon Transit service via Route #5 (Assiniboine) will remain status quo for the duration of the demolition process. Brandon Police Service Media Release On May 10th 2017, Brandon Police Service members received a notification to be on the look for a Black Audi vehicle with a Saskatchewan license plate. A caller indicated witnessing a male punching a female in this vehicle while it travelled southbound on 1st street.  Police attended to the area however were not able to locate a vehicle matching this description. Several hours later, officers received information that a male was operating a Black Audi SUV with Saskatchewan license plates and possibly in possession of a handgun.  In the early morning hours of May 11th, Police located an unoccupied Black Audi SUV with Saskatchewan license plates in a parking lot of a Hotel in the 200 Block of 18th Street North. Police investigation led to identifying the operator of the Black Audi and Police records checks showed the male from Saskatoon to have a lengthy and violent criminal record.  Police investigation continued and more Police resources attended to the area. The male was found to be the subject of a Recognizance and bound by a condition to observe a daily curfew and reside at a residence in Saskatoon. At 12:22 p.m., Police observed the male and a female exit a hotel room and get into the vehicle with the male driving. Police attempted to conduct a vehicle stop and an Officer tried to control the male and take him into custody however, the vehicle fled and a pursuit ensued. The Officer was dragged a short distance as the vehicle sped off. The Officer did not sustain injuries as a result of being dragged. The pursuit ended when the male lost control of the vehicle in the rail yard under the 1st street Bridge. The female attempted to run but was taken into custody and the male was able to flee on foot. Officers conducted a search of the area with the k-9 unit and the male was located hiding in a shed at the rear of a residence in the 00 Block of 3rd Street.  A check of the vehicle identification number found that the vehicle was stolen from Saskatoon. A 31-year-old male from Saskatoon has been charged with the following offences and will appear in Court on Friday. Breach of Recognizance Flight while Pursued by a Police Officer Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Drive While Disqualified. A 26-year-old female of No Fixed Address has been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. She will appear in Court on Friday. Investigation continued and Police received information that a male  was at a residence in the 600 Block of Franklin Street and in Possession of a Hand Gun and Assault rifle. At 4:52 p.m., the male exited the residence and was taken into Police custody. A search of the residence recovered a .22 caliber long rifle, 20 gauge shot gun, Savage Hunting rifle and a SNR .357 B.B. Handgun. A red dodge truck parked at the residence was found to be stolen from Prince Albert Saskatchewan. A 31-year-old male from Saskatoon has been charged with the following offences and will appear in Court on Friday. Brandon Police Service Media Release Five people have been arrested following the result of a traffic stop, and execution of a search warrant, in the 200 block of Rosser Ave E in Brandon. The search warrant was in relation to CDSA and Criminal Code offenses following a Crime Support Unit investigation. Police say they seized a sawed off semi-auto shotgun, loaded, an ammo belt with fourteen 12gauge shells, a .22 calibre hand gun with a banana style clip with 2 rounds, two cans of bear spray, sixteen .32 calibre rifle cartridges and 80 grams of Marihuana. In total 20 Criminal Code and CDSA charges were laid and 4 Warrants of Arrest executed. Among those arrested include a 27 year old Brandon man, 24 year old Winnipeg man, and a 26 year old resident of Griswold, MB. Two females were also arrested including a 19 year old Brandon woman, and a 16 year old Brandon youth. All are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

City of Brandon Release Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon, along with management and staff at the Brandon Municipal Airport, are extremely pleased to inform the public that, as of today, the newly-expanded airport terminal facility is now open for all arrivals and departures activity. Upon entrance into the expanded facility, travellers are greeted with a spacious check-in and baggage check area before proceeding to a separate security screening area operated by The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). The new departures lounge features a comfortable seating area complete with device charging stations, as well as snack/beverage/coffee vending machines, a water fountain/bottle fill station, an ATM terminal, and accessible washroom facilities. Inbound travellers to the airport will enter the terminal via the arrivals area to pick up any checked luggage and also have access to an on-site car rental kiosk. A total of 130 short-term parking (7 days or less) stalls, including designated accessible stalls and those set aside for taxis, are available for use at no charge. Vehicles requiring long-term parking are required to park in the airport’s overflow parking lot, which is located to the west of the terminal building. Vehicles found to be parked in the short-term parking lot in excess of 7 days may be ticketed at the discretion of airport management. The public is also reminded that the loading and unloading zone directly in front of the terminal building is for passenger drop-off ONLY and CANNOT be used by parked vehicles waiting for departing or arriving travellers. Vehicles found to be parked in violation of this provision may also be ticketed. Management and staff at the Brandon Municipal Airport wish to advise motorists of surface breaks that currently exist along Sandison Road in the area of the airport entrance. As the roadway is under provincial jurisdiction for maintenance, the City of Brandon is working with Manitoba Infrastructure to improve its surface conditions. Management and staff will spend the next several weeks getting used to using the full space, with a grand opening ceremony slated for this summer.
