New Traffic Calming Measures Installed As A Part of Vision Zero Initiative

In an effort to maintain safe roads in Brandon and in continuation of the efforts of the Speed Reduction Pilot Project, the City of Brandon has installed two new traffic calming measures to aid in the enforcement of a reduced speed limit. A pair of chicanes, which is a horizontal traffic control measure, have been installed at the intersection of Durum Drive and Neepawa Drive. A mini roundabout has been installed at the intersection of Princess Avenue East and Douglas Street. The traffic calming installed is of a temporary nature and while it is not meant to be a permanent solution, their placement will help in decision making about any permanent traffic calming that should be installed as a part of a capital project. The use of traffic calming in conjunction with a reduced speed limit helps the City achieve compliance with set speed limits. These intersections will be tested with various traffic monitoring devices and local enforcement to ensure that they are working as intended. “The new traffic calming measures are the next steps to achieve Vision Zero by using the safe systems approach to road safety” says Sam van Huizen, City of Brandon Traffic & Transportation Planner. “We understand that these changes may be difficult for motorists who use these areas, however, the City is committed to fostering a safe roadway for all road users and we ask for everyone to drive safely and ensure that everyone makes it safely home.” About the Speed Reduction Pilot Project In December 2021 at the recommendation of Council, the Engineering Department implemented a reduced speed zone along Durum Drive between 26th Street and Aberdeen Avenue as a starting point to test compliance with a reduced speed zone with signage only. The pilot project was expanded in the Spring of 2023 to incorporate the entire Parkdale Neighbourhood, River Heights Neighbourhood, Princess Avenue East, and the local streets that surround Rideau Park.
