The Manitoba government is investing $9.7 million to resurface 18th Street in Brandon, Premier Wab Kinew and Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced here today. “Our government is committed to keeping Manitoban communities safe and we recognize the importance of 18th Street to Brandon and the Westman region,” said Kinew. “Speeding up the reconstruction timeline to get shovels in the ground showcases our commitment to creating vibrant communities, ones where both residents and businesses have the infrastructure they need to prosper.” The project will reconstruct 18th Street (Provincial Trunk Highway 10) from Aberdeen Avenue to Rosser Avenue, and includes milling the existing pavement surface to mitigate deep potholes and replacing it with two layers of new bituminous pavement. The proposed work will tie into the existing geometry of the roadway and will not require any changes to the gutter system or curbs, the premier said, noting the project is expected to start next week and be completed in October. “Brandon’s 18th Street is a busy thoroughfare and is an important route for not only for the city but residents and businesses across Westman,” said Naylor. “Reconstruction work was originally scheduled to start in 2028-29, but because the road deteriorated quicker from this year’s spring thaw cycle and public concerns surrounding safety, we are speeding up work on this project.” This project supports Manitoba’s Multi-Year Infrastructure Investment Strategy, which outlines $4.1 billion in planned strategic investments in roads, highways, bridges, airports and flood protection over the next five years as Manitoba continues to invest in building the economy and fueling future growth. “We are thrilled to have partnered with the province to ensure the timely completion of essential work on 18th Street,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett, City of Brandon. “This project will greatly enhance mobility for both the citizens of Brandon and our visitors, making it easier for everyone to navigate across our city. Assault On August 31st, a male was assaulted in the 1400 block of Lorne Ave resulting in minor injuries. The suspect fled the scene prior to Police arrival but was located the following day. A 44yr old Brandon man has subsequently been charged with assault and will appear in Court in November. Fraud Use of Debit Card On June 19th, Police received a fraud complaint where it was alleged that a male suspect fraudulently used the complainant’s bank card, after being given access to it, to purchase groceries on her behalf. The investigation revealed that over period of 8 months this male suspect used the card for personal purchases or cash withdrawals for a total of approximately $10,000. On September 1st, the 45yr old male suspect was located, charged and will appear in Court in November.

At 2120 hours a male was walking his dog in the 500 block of 4th street when he was confronted by an 18 year old male who pointed an imitation firearm (BB gun) at him. After a brief confrontation the 18 year old male shot the other male with the BB gun multiple times then ran away being chased by the victim. The accused was apprehended by police a short distance away and a police K-9 located the BB gun discarded in an open field behind a nearby business. The victim did not sustain any serious injuries and the 18 year old male was lodged for court the following morning.

The Brandon Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating this person who is: “WANTED BY POLICE”: Matthew REDDAWAY FOR Theft Under $5000 & Breach of Probation.  On July 24th, 2024, Matthew REDDAWAY entered a business located in 1000 block of Richmond Avenue. Once inside, REDDAWAY went shopping, however failed to pay for the merchandise and fled prior to police arrival. REDDAWAY was identified through video surveillance and at the time was on Probation for Theft Under X3 among other charges.  Matthew REDDAWAY’s whereabouts are unknown at this time, please contact Brandon crime stoppers with any information. On August 16th, 2024, an unknown male was captured on video surveillance entering a business located in the 000 block of 10th Street. Warrant Executed On August 28th at 1:44PM police noticed a male rolling around in the ditch off Aberdeen Avenue. When approached the male became rude and aggressive. The 48-year-old male was identified and found to have an outstanding warrant for Failure to Comply with Release Order. He was arrested and lodged for court in the morning.   On August 28th at 3:33PM police were called to a disturbance in the 2200 block of Pacific Avenue. A 34-year-old male was found to be the cause of issues. He had an endorsed Warrant of Arrest for Assault. He was arrested and transported to BPS. He was later released on an Appearance Notice with a court date of October 28th, 2024.   On August 28th at 4:21 police located a 29-year-old male while walking through Princess Park. He was found to have an endorsed Warrant of Arrest for Sexual Assault and Failure to Attend Court. The male was sober and released on scene with an Appearance Notice for court on October 17th, 2024.   Breach of Peace On August 28th at 7:10PM a shuttle driver called as he had to pull over due to two males fighting. Police officers attended a 29-year-old male was found to be the cause of the issue. Police had dealt with this male in a different situation earlier in the day.  The male was arrested and lodged to prevent further issues.   On August 28th at 10:55PM police attended Days Inn for an intoxicated 27-year-old female fighting people outside the hotel. She was arrested and lodged until sober.   On August 28th at 11:32PM police attended Clarion Hotel as a 25-year-old male was intoxicated and being aggressive towards staff. The male was arrested and lodged until sober.   On August 29th at 12:41AM Clarion Hotel reports a disturbance with three males. A 23-year-old male was the primary cause of issue and was arrested and lodged until sober.   On August 29th at 1:08AM police were called to the ER where an 18-year-old female was highly intoxicated and being belligerent to hospital staff as well as police upon arrival. She had a cut to the hand, would not provide information to police and continued to cause problems at the hospital. She was medically tended to, then arrested and lodged until sober.   On August 29th at 1:25AM police were called to a disturbance in the 100 block of 12th Street North. A 36-year-old male was lodged to prevent further issues.   IPDA On August 28th at 11:44PM police located an intoxicated female in the 100 block of 18th Street. There was no one to turn the highly intoxicated 23-year-old woman over to so she was lodged until sober.   On August 29th at 2:12AM police received a call that a male was trying to gain access to an apartment building in the 200 block of 4th Street. The 56-year-old male was located and found to be highly intoxicated but had no one to turn himself over to. He was lodged and will be released once sober.   Failure to Comply – Release Order On August 28th at 8:48PM police conducted a curfew check on a 37-year-old male and it was determined that he was not at the residence. (8pm-6am curfew). Upon notice of his return police attended and arrested the male. Lodged for court in the morning on August 29th, 2024.
