Vincent Massey students find success in recent chemistry contests

Vincent Massey High School is proud to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of several students in the following chemistry contests: CHEM 13 NEWS EXAM sponsored by the University of Waterloo, is designed for Grade 12 high school students who are in their senior level Chemistry course. This year, on May 11°h, Vincent Massey High School Students competed amongst 15S1 of the top high school students in the United States, Canada, and other prominent international schools in the Annual University of Waterloo Chemistry Exam competition. Vincent Massey is very proud of the entire group of 13 students that represented the school, for their participation in this year's rendition of the competition. Many of the students obtained an overall score higher than the World Average. Antoni Ktonowski of Vincent Massey scored in the 99th percentile, ranked 4th in Canada and 14°h (top 1%) in the world. Sydney Komanac scored in the 91st percentile (top 10% in Canada and top 15% in the world). Antoni and Sydney (pictured above) received a certificate of distinction and a limited-edition plaque featuring an element from the Timeline of Elements poster for their outstanding achievements. In addition, Saifullah Irshad, Maya Kirby, Phoebe Oyetade, and Samuel Kayode were awarded Certificates of Achievement for securing top 20% of all exam takers in Canada. Congratulations to all participants and winners. CANADIAN CHEMISTRY CONTEST and CANADIAN CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD, sponsored by the Chemical Institute of Canada, fosters an appreciation of Chemistry as a Career for talented young people and promotes national excellence in Chemistry at the High School level. Vincent Massey students participated in the annual contest on April 6th. Antoni Klonowski and Makayla Martin of Vincent Massey ranked 1st and 2nd respectively in the Canadian Chemistry Contest for the Prairies region. Both received a cash prize and Merit certificate to commemorate their performance. Additionally, Samuel Kayode placed top 20% in the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad. Congratulations to all participants and winners.

Police recover firearms from home, suspects face multiple charges

On the afternoon of 2023-06-04, police attended to an address on Westaway Bay in an attempt to locate a male with an outstanding warrant.  Police were granted entry to the home by a resident, whereby a male and female were located in the basement of the home.  At the initial point of interaction, police discovered a 22 calibre sawed off rifle and ammunition.  A search warrant of the residence was initiated which resulted in the recovery of an additional 30.06 rifle, a 22 calibre rifle and a 22 calibre home made zip gun.  The 28-year-old male is currently on bail and is not to possess firearms due to an incident that occurred on Cornwallis Crescent in the fall of 2022.  The male is to appear court 2023-06-05 for his warrant in addition and numerous new weapons charges. The 20-year-old female has been released with conditions to appear in court 2023-07-31 for Possession of firearm x 2, Possession of Restricted Firearm x2, Careless storage of firearm, and Tamper with Serial Number.

Brandon man charged with impaired driving after striking fence

At 2:39 am on Saturday, a vehicle struck a fence in the 1600 block of Sycamore Dr.  Officers attended and located the driver of the vehicle who displayed signs of impairment. He was arrested and provided samples of his breath at the police service with results exceeding the legal limit.  A 19  year old Brandon resident has been charged with Impaired Driving and Driving over 80 mg%. He was released to appear in court later in June.

Brandon man arrested following alleged dine-and-dash

On June 1, 2023, shortly before 8:00 pm, police responded to a report of a male who attempted to leave without paying for his meal from a restaurant in the 1200 block of 18th street.  The 33-year-old male left out the emergency exit, but was arrested nearby.  He was later released to appear in court on July 27, 2023 on a charge of Fraudulently Obtaining Food.

Male suspect arrested for sexually assaulting child

On May 30, 2023 shortly before midnight, police received a report of an 11-year-old female who had been sexually assaulted by a 20-year-old male at his residence.  The victim and the suspect are known to one another. On May 31, 2023, shortly after 2:00 am, the suspect was arrested and lodged at Brandon Police Service. Members of BPS Major Crime Unit continued to investigate and obtained a warrant to search the suspect’s home at approximately 11:30 am. On May 31, 2023, the suspect appeared in court and was remanded in custody on charges of Invitation to Sexual Touching, Sexual Interference, Sexual Assault, and Fail to Comply with Release Order.
