The U15 AAA Female Wheat Kings defeated the Eastman Selects Saturday to lay claim to the U15 AAA Manitoba Female Hockey League title. Brandon took the best of five final series 3 games to 1, limiting the Selects to only 6 goals in those four games. That’s a wrap on another MFHL U15 Season! Cougars soccer will have a new home field at the Maple Leaf Foods Sports Complex.   The college and the City of Brandon have reached a partnership agreement that will see the FIFA Field be developed and named Cougars Field until at least 2040. Cougars Field will be part of the Maple Leaf Foods Sports Complex, a multi-sport venue located at First Street and Veterans Way. The complex will feature a lighted FIFA sized soccer field, eight 11 v 11 soccer fields, a 9 v 9 soccer field, a cricket pitch, a clubhouse with changerooms and washrooms, and 3.6 km of pathways. The project, which is supported by the governments of Canada and Manitoba, is expected to be completed by early 2025.  “We are thrilled to have Assiniboine College as a partner in the Maple Leaf Foods Sports Complex,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett. “Assiniboine is a valued partner of the City of Brandon, and together with all of our sponsors, we are committed to enhancing our city for the benefit of all.”  The college will retain naming rights, have preferred access to field times, signage, access to amenities, and no operating costs as part of the 15-year, $475,000 sponsorship partner agreement. “Given the proximity to our North Hill Campus, working in partnership with the community just made sense,” noted Mark Frison, president of Assiniboine. “For the college, this makes best use of scarce resources for capital development and operating costs for our varsity athletic program. Further, it allows the field to be used by the rest of the community and managed by those with expertise in the sport.” The college estimated that building a similar field on its own campus land would be well over $1 million in construction, plus additional annual operating and maintenance costs.   The college began the varsity soccer program in 2013. The City of Brandon is dedicated to providing quality events, programs, facilities, and services to all residents, while being responsible with its main revenue source, property tax dollars. Partnering is a way for the City to generate alternative funding sources to improve the quality of life for the residents of Brandon and the surrounding area. Earlier today, Boissevain's Danika Nell was named to to the Canadian U18 Women’s National Team that will compete in the 2024 WBSC Americas Pan American Championship from March 30 – April 6 in Montería, Colombia. Danika started playing softball as a 6 year old for the Boissevain Mites team, her family’s hometown since moving there from South Africa in 1998. Over the years Westman fans have been able to follow her development with the Westman Magic u12 team and Magic u14 squad. The talented pitcher and left-handed batter also committed to Boston University for NCAA Division I softball. Truly a dream come true! Most curlers can play the game they love for decades and never witness or be part of an “eight ender.” A Brandon curling team however accomplished one of the rarest feats in the sport when Team Tutkaluke collected an eight-ender during a Friday Night Mixed league game (February 16) at the Brandon Curling Club. The rare feat was orchestrated in the first end while the opposition held the hammer. Team Tutkaluke consists of Nolan Tutkaluke, Tammy Tutkaluke, Kyle Armour and Jodi Armour. The team has played together on and off for about 15 years.

Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA forward, Jaxon Jacobson was selected the MVP in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League for the 2023-2024 season. With 4 games left in the regular season, Jacobson leads the league in scoring with 91 points in only 31 games played. Teammate Brady Turko sits in second place, 8 points back, with 83 points. For his efforts, Turko was also selected and awarded the Hockey Ability and Sportsmanship player in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League for the 2023-2024 season. The high scoring duo join defensemen Kaeson Fisher and Owen Wallace on being selected to the 1st Allstar Team. Kaeson Fisher was also selected the Most Outstanding Defenceman in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League for the 2023-2024 season. The talented defensemen was selected 124th overall in the sixth round of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft by the Everett Silvertips.
