Vincent Massey High School student Hayley Shanks has signed a letter of intent to golf for the Valley City State University Vikings starting this fall. Hayley is an accomplished golfer having won the Tamarack Match Play Tournament two years in a row and being named MVP of the Vincent Massey golf team the past two seasons. She is currently finishing her last year at Vincent Massey and plans to study psychology while at Valley City.

In 2013, Brandon residents Jason Earl (Glen Lea Golf Course manager/owner) and Marty Kauk (Wheat City Electric owner) along with a few friends felt that it was time to do something very unique with their winters. So five friends including Tyler Grime, Shane Cashin, and Brett Elder had the idea to buy some fighter pilot helmets and Jets jerseys and check out the Winnipeg Jets playing the Tampa Bay Lighting and Florida Panthers. So what is really the big deal?  The group have made the Florida trip an annual tradition and have been dubbed the MB Helmet Heads. Now recognized whenever they visit they have become cult like icons at these games. Over the years up to as many as 19 people have made the trip to South Florida to share some Canadian passion for the sport. Jason Earl said so many things are different when you go to the games down south including some ticket prices being available for as low as $6.50 (which is cheaper than going to a AAA Midget game in Manitoba)...or for $25.00 you can have all you can eat Subway and beer. Kauk said the people are beyond friendly to them and that it is almost a paparazzi like  experience when they arrive.  “Ushers and security staff go out of their way for us to feel welcome at the games”. According to Earl, the other teams fan base looks forward to their visit each year and the lineup to take pictures with the group can become really large at times. Some of the crew that have attended in the past include Glen Earl, Trevor Peters, Jim Kauk, Chris Bauman, Derek Stewart, Connor Thompson, Ty Froese, Greg Gaboury, Nathan Peto and Cam Toews.

A team of 11 boys from Baldur, Binscarth, Brandon, Miniota, Plumas, Russell and Strathclair will be traveling to Cuba  April 17th to 25th, 2019 to play baseball with 3 different teams and to participate in a baseball clinic with local Cuban children. They will also be spending time at a Cuban School. The players that are going will be representing our country as ambassadors for our communities! The team is currently fundraising, collecting monetary donations, new or gently used baseball equipment and school supplies from local baseball associations, companies and individuals.  These funds will help with shipping their donations to Cuba, purchasing items (school supplies, hygiene products, soaps, toothbrushes, candy, etc) needed in Cuba to be given to the baseball clubs and school children, They will be hosting a hot dog fundraiser on the 6th of April at the Sobeys in the Brandon Shoppers Mall from 11am-4pm.  A hot dog and a drink will cost you $2.00. Donations of NEW school supplies and gently used baseball equipment can be dropped off to be taken and given to the children in Cuba. Proceeds will be used for team expenses / travel / items to be purchased and donated to children in Cuba. The Assiniboine Cougars women’s hockey team have won the ACHA D-II National Championship with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Minot State University Beavers. Simone Turner-Cummer scored the games only goal in the first period in leading ACC to the title. Marley Quesnel picked up the shutout in net for ACC. In semi-final action Saturday, the Cougars advanced to today's final in Texas after defeating the back-to-back defending champion Lakehead University by the score of 2-1. Simone Turner-Cummer scored both goals for the Cougars to help them punch their ticket into today's Championship tilt.

The Wendy's Winter Hockey League concluded their 2018/19 season with three exciting and highly competitive championship games. Over in Division 1, the Double Decker Icemen (pictured above) received a late 3rd period goal from Brett Boshman to defeat B.O.B. Blazers by the score of 4-3.  The Icemen found themselves down by 3 goals half way through the game before storming back and scoring 4 of their own. Matt Rey, Paul Bonar and Brett Hesselwood also scored for the Icemen. Brett Kitt, Brad McDonald and Kyle Wells replied for the Blazers in a losing cause. Sioux Valley/Dominos claimed the Division 3 title with a 5-2 win over Montana's. Ronnie Vermette lead the way offensively for Dominos potting 2 goals. Jay Moosetail and Nathan Flett each picked up 3 points on the strength of 1 goal and 2 assists. Jason Taylor picked up the win in net for Sioux Valley. Ty Workman and Jenna Patterson scored for Montana's.   William Howell, Austin Gamache, Jeremy Delong, and Travis Lund all scored for The Dock in their 4-3 win over Precision Toyota in the Division 4 final.  Jordan Hagemeister and Scott Rouire each added 2 assists for The Dock while Tanner Klemick made 23 saves in securing the win. Kelsey Fehr (2) and Richard Smith had the Precision Toyota goals.
