Brandon to Host 2025 U19 Women’s Western Canadian Softball Championship this weekend

The city of Brandon is gearing up to welcome some of the best young softball talent in the country as it plays host to the 2025 U19 Women’s Western Canadian Softball Championship from August 7 to 10. The prestigious event will take place at the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex, one of the top fast‑pitch facilities in Western Canada. The championship will feature elite U19 women’s teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. The four‑day tournament will see teams battle it out in a round‑robin format before moving into playoff and medal rounds on the final day. Brandon’s selection as host city follows its successful staging of last year’s inaugural U13 Girls Western Canadian Championship, which drew praise for its organization, volunteer support and quality of play. Those same strengths will be on display again this summer. The championship will include an opening ceremony on August 7 at 6:30pm featuring team introductions, provincial flag presentations and dignitary speeches. Games will run daily, culminating in gold‑ and bronze‑medal finals on August 10. Local fans are encouraged to attend and support the athletes as they compete for the title of Western Canadian champions.

Wheat Kings defensemen, Giorgos Pantelas has been selected to represent Team Canada at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup as part of Hockey Canada’s U18 National Team. Canada will look to capture a fourth-straight gold medal at the tournament, set for Aug. 11-16 in Brno, Czechia and Trencin, Slovakia. Canadian Wrestling's Elite returns to Brandon, Manitoba for the first time in 6 years on Sunday, August 17th. The card will take place at Houstons Country Roadhouse, doors open at 8:30 with a 6pm bell time.  Former WWE Star Brian Kendrick,  "Bad Boy" Anderson Tyson Moore, "The Zombie Killer" MENTALLO, "Red Hot" Sammy Peppers, and more are scheduled to appear. Brandon's Mason Lobreau has committed to playing for the Augustana Men’s Hockey in the fall of 2025. Lobreay recently  finished his junior career with the Neepawa Titans of the MJHL. Prior to joining Neepawa, he spent a season (2021-22) with the U18 AAA Wheat Kings where he posted an impressive record of 19-2-2. The 2025 Southwest Baseball League is drawing to a close as the Boissevain Centennials presently hold a 2-1 series lead over the Oak River Dodgers. in the league's best of 5 championship final.  Boissevain is looking to claim their 4th consecutive league title, According to multiple  reports, Roger McQueen will be announcing his commitment to Providence College in next day or two. McQueen was recently the 10th overall pick in the 2025 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks.  

Brandon’s McCaig Joins the Brooks Bandits as Assistant Coach

The Brooks Bandits, competing in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), today officially announced that Cole McCaig has been hired as their new Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2025–26 season. McCaig arrives in Brooks following a highly successful seven-year tenure with the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). During that time, the Bombers qualified for the playoffs in six out of seven seasons — the 2021 postseason was canceled due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. McCaig was instrumental on staff during two trips to the SJHL Finals in 2021‑22 and again in 2023‑24, as well as competing in the 2022 Centennial Cup quarterfinals in Estevan, SK. A  former captain of the U18 AAA Wheat Kings (2010-2011, McCaig brings strong roots in Canadian junior hockey. He played with the Bombers from 2011 to 2014, appearing in 123 games, and also suited up for Waywayseecappo in the MJHL. He went on to play 96 NCAA games over four seasons at Marian University in Wisconsin before beginning his coaching career. It should also be noted that McCaig spent many summers serving as a timekeeper for the Source for Sports AAA Summer Hockey Challenge held annually in Brandon. The 2025‑26 regular season kicks off on September 19 in Spruce Grove, with the Bandits’ home opener slated for September 20 versus the Okotoks Oilers. City of Brandon announces Kinsmen Pool Opening for 2025

The City of Brandon is excited to announce that the Kinsmen Pool will open tomorrow, July 23, 2025 at 11 a.m.! Located at 411 Park Street, the pool's opening was initially delayed due to mechanical issues. It has since undergone extensive testing, repairs, and cleaning, and has successfully passed an inspection by Manitoba Health. “We are thrilled to be able to officially open our outdoor pool for the season and invite everyone to enjoy it,” said Todd Burton, General Manager of Operations. “I want to thank our dedicated team who worked diligently to get this pool operational.” The outdoor Kinsmen Pool will offer a variety of scheduled activities including public, family, and lap swim times. A full schedule can be found at brandon.ca/parks-recreation/recreation-and-sports/swimming-and-pools. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian aged 13 years or older. The admission rates are as follows: Infants (Under 2 years): Free Children (2–12 years): $5 Youth/Seniors (13–17 years & 55+): $6 Adults (18–54 years): $7 Families (2 adults & up to 5 children): $18 Payments can be made on-site at the Kinsmen Pool using cash, debit card, or credit card. 10 swim punch cards are also available for purchase. Participants are encouraged to bring their own towels and any necessary amenities. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted, but glass bottles or containers are prohibited on the premises. The Brandon Wheat Kings commence their 2025-26 season on Friday, September 19 against the Moose Jaw Warriors. In other Wheat King news, the club announced that Levi Ellingsen, (1st round, 1st overall pick in the 2025 U.S. Priority Draft) signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. They have also signed Jimmy Egan (Mahtomedi, Minn) to the WHL scholarship and development agreement. The team also announced Jake McKercher as the new Equipment Manager. Jaxon Jacobson and Giorgos Pantelas were selected to attend Hockey Canada’s prestigious U18 Program of Excellence summer camp The U15 A Westman Premier Homes softball team became Provincial champions after defeating a team from Ste. Rose in Sunday's championship game. Thirty-one teams took part in the tournament (July 4-6) that was played in Winkler from July 4-6 . The U17 ATB Services squad also secured a provincial championship this past weekend upending a team from Virden in the title game played in Steinbach. Evan Nachtigall of the  Shilo Golf and Country Club is the 2025 Nott Autocorp Men's Amateur Champion, earning himself an exemption to compete in his first professional event the PGA Tour America’s Manitoba Open in Winnipeg from August 21-24. With a narrow 8-6 victory over a resilient Southeast Express squad, the Onanole Sporty's Originals captured the Borderline Legends fastball league championship for a 3rd time on Wednesday evening.
