3 Brandon teens selected to Team Manitoba’s 17U Canada Summer Games Roster

Baseball Manitoba recently announced their roster for the upcoming 17U Team Manitoba Canada Games baseball team that will represent Manitoba on Aug 6-13 in Niagara Falls. Brandon's Skylar Ramsey, Nolan Chastko and Dylan Schrader were among the players named. Of note, the three were also teammates this past season with the Brandon AAA U18 Wheat Kings hockey team. Connor Martin (Nesbitt ), Mason De Ruyck (Killarney) & Tyler Robertson (Boissevain) were also selected. The 6 players are all currently members of the AAA - 18u AAA Marlins.

Wheat Kings select Russian defenceman in annual import draft

The Wheat Kings added one player to their prospect pool during Friday’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. With the 34th overall pick in the first round the Wheat Kings chose 18-year-old Defenceman Andrei Malyavin from Russia. The 5’10” 167lb Voronezh product played with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL last season, recording two goals and 13 points in 44 games played. Malyavin joins Belarusian Forward Zakhar Polshakov who was selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2021 CHL Import Draft.  Clubs are permitted to carry a maximum of two imports. Polshakov finished his first season in the Western Hockey League with the Wheat Kings recording 5 goals and nineteen points during 55 games played.  The Centerman entering his 19-year-old season in Brandon, led the team in face-off winning percentage last season. The top pick in the CHL Import Draft belonged to the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers and they selected Slovakian Forward Adam Sykora. Malyavin becomes the seventh Russian born player to be selected by the Wheat Kings in the Import Draft, since it was established in 1993. First ever Central Canadian Amateur National Championship held in Brandon

The Central Canadian Amateur Nationals were held in Brandon at the Transcanada Moto Park over the weekend. Participants from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and B.C. took to the track as part of the Canadian Triple Crown Series going across Canada.

Former Wheat King wins AHL Calder Cup championship

Stelio Mattheos, and his Chicago Wolves teammates, won the AHL Calder Cup championship yesterday. They defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds in 5 games (4W,1L) to secure the title. Mattheos spent four full seasons with the Wheat Kings, serving as team captain in 2018-19. In 2017, he was drafted in round 3 #73 overall by the Carolina Hurricanes. He suited up in all 18 playoff games for the Wolves, registering 4 points (2g,2a).
