Collings Wins 2016 Grey Owl

Garth Collings shot an impressive four under 68 Sunday on his way to capturing his 11th Grey Owl Championship at the Clear Lake Golf Course.  Collings shot a 70 on Saturday and found himself in a three-way tie atop the leader board with Brandon's Jared Jacobson and Brian Clark of Cold Lake, Alberta. Other notables making the 56th Championship round on Sunday included David Glenn and Nolan Tutkaluk who both golf out of the Shilo Golf & Country Club.  They each found themselves two strokes back of the leaders after carting a 72 in their opening rounds. David Glenn fired a three under par on Sunday and finished as the runner-up to Collings.  Steven Young and Jared Jacobson each finished with two day totals of 145 after shooting 71 and 75 respectively on the final day of the competition.  Dwight Kearns captured the Greyer Owls division with a two day total of 155 while the media division was won by Kirk Penton, of the Winnipeg Sun, with a 170. The Grey Owl golf tournament annually features 320 golfers of varying skill level and is considered one of the Manitoba's premiere golf events of the season.   Junior Golf in Manitoba and the Prostate Cancer division of the Canadian Cancer Society of Manitoba are two charity organizations who are supported by money raised during the tournament.

Motocross Racing Coming to Brandon

The most talented and dedicated motocross racers in the province are set to wage war at Farm Boys Raceway in Brandon, Manitoba on Sunday June the 19th.   Farm Boys Raceway is an amazing facility located only minutes from downtown Brandon and features rich black loamy soil, no rocks, a 40 bike starting gate, rhythm section, uphill rollers and a finish line jump.  It is one of a handful of sanctioned Manitoba Motocross Association tracks in Manitoba and this season will mark the 18th consecutive year the raceway has hosted an event making it the longest serving track on the MMA circuit. The annual event will feature hundreds of riders in as many as 15 different classes including ladies and a plus 40 category.  The weekend's showcase will be the 6th event in a 12 event race season for the Manitoba Motocross Association and will feature many different vendors and a full concession. Directions:6.4 km south of Brandon on Hwy #10 turn east at the white semi-trailer bill board (parked in west ditch). Go 4.8km east to the Hargreaves’ mailbox (on south side) and drive into the track site approx 1.2 km south  

RBC Golf Day

On Sunday, June 12th, RBC will be partnering with Mulligan’s Driving Range & Practice Centre  to celebrate the upcoming RBC Canadian Open (July 18-24 in Oakville, ON). Compliments of RBC, golfers will receive a free bucket of range balls and swing tips from one of Mulligan’s certified USGTF golf pros. RBC Golf Day participants will have the opportunity to enter a contest, for a chance to win a VIP experience for two to the 2016 RBC Canadian Open. The contest will also be open to the general public beginning Saturday, June 4th, 2016. You can enter the contest at www.rbc.com/swingtowin.  For those of you who want to practice your putting, there will be a putting contest, where golfers will have the opportunity to win additional RBC golf prizes. Jamie Hodgson Inducted into MB Baseball Hall of Fame

Jamie Hodgson, of Brandon, was introduced into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in a ceremony on June the 4th in Morden, MB.  Jamie spent more than 20 years (1988-2010) as a member of the Brandon Cloverleafs of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League. He also played on the Manitoba Youth Team and the Summer games team in 1989. Throughout his MSBL career he maintained a .375 batting average and won three batting titles and two home run crowns.  Not only was Jamie one of the league’s top hitters he also managed to pick up 27 pitching wins on the mound and struck out an impressive 359 batters in only 405 innings. Jamie was originally drafted by the the Kansas City Royals back in 1992 after completing two years of US College ball.  He went on the pitch one summer in their minor league organization and later on in his career played one season professionally with his hometown Brandon Grey Owls in 1995. Joining Jamie into the Hall of Fame on this day were nine other players:  Myles Bond, Mike Krykewich, Rod Leduchowski, Larry Nicholls, Gerald Palidwor, Mel Soughton, Jeff Trager, Glen Johnson and Ross Tycoles.

Handful of Locals Selected in 2016 MJHL Draft

The MJHL held its annual bantam draft today in Selkirk and a number of Brandon and Westman hockey products were among the 66 players selected.  The event which could be viewed for free, via the Fast Hockey link, on the MJHL web site (www.mjhlhockey.ca) featured the top hockey players in the province who were born in 2001.  The first Brandon product selected was speedy forward Tristen Robins who went to the Steinbach Pistons with the 10th pick in the second round.  Tristen put up 91 points in 35 games with the Brandon Bantam AAA Wheat Kings.  Taken one pick after Robins was forward Tanner Morrison who was drafted by this year's MJHL Champions Portage Terriers.  Morrison had 39 points in 36 regular season games this past season. The third round didn't see a Brandon product selected however the fourth round was very active as three players from this seasons Bantam AAA Wheat Kings:  Colin Cook, Drayson Collyer, and Dylan Halliday were each drafted by Wawayseecappo, OCN, and Virden respectively. Portage chose goaltender Trent Minor with the last pick in the 5th round.  Jared Twerdoclib, a defenseman, was the last Brandon became property of the Dauphin Kings with the 3rd pick in the 6th and final round. Notes: Minor, Robins, and Halliday (pictured below) were all drafted by WHL teams earlier in the summer.  Neepawa Natives had the first pick overall and selected Parker Malchuk out of Birtle.  Virden's first pick was Logan Rands, a defenseman, out of Portage. Other Westman residents selected include Callum Fortin, Randy Cooke and Jordan Chudley of Souris, Cody Shearer from Wawanesa, Zane McDonald of Minnedosa, and Vista's Cole Muir.
