Introducing Proposed Changes To The Building By-Law
The City of Brandon’s Engineering Department is proposing to introduce some key changes to the City’s Building By-Law. These proposed amendments aim to enhance safety and streamline processes for property owners.
Here are the key changes that may impact you:
- Temporary and Seasonal Shelters: The Building By-law will no longer regulate the construction of temporary, seasonal, portable, and fabric accessory shelters (such as tents, vehicle tents, portable gazebos, and pergolas). These structures will be exempt if they do not pose a hazard to surrounding buildings and adhere to setback and height requirements as outlined in the City of Brandon’s Zoning By-Law at brandon.ca/zbl.
- Certificate of Occupancy: Before occupying any building excluding garages and storage sheds, a Certificate of Occupancy will be mandatory. This certificate ensures compliance with all conditions, requirements, and deposits associated with the building permit.
An online public information session will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 3 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. To register for this session or for more information, please contact Murray Fischer, the Building Safety Manager, at m.fischer@brandon.ca or call 204-729-2151.
Following the public information session, Brandon City Council will hear the first reading of the proposed changes to the Building By-Law at the regular Council meeting on Monday, March 4, 2024, with a 2nd and 3rd reading to follow at a future meeting date.
