Brandon to benefit from Manitoba’s free youth transit program

The Manitoba government is investing more than $1 million to provide free transit for youth in Brandon, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard and Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced here today.

“Free youth transit in Brandon is another major win for affordability for families, saving parents more than $700 per child,” said Simard. “This means real savings every month and fewer barriers for young people trying to get where they need to go. When we make transit free for youth, we’re not just helping families today, we’re encouraging lifelong transit use that keeps Brandon moving for generations.”

Passes are available now and are being distributed to students through schools in partnership with Brandon School Division. Beginning in November, passes will be distributed through the Brandon Transit Information Centre at 723 Rosser Ave.

“Reliable transportation is essential for student success,” said Schmidt. “This investment supports thousands of young people across Manitoba and strengthens our commitment to accessible education.”

A monthly youth transit pass currently cost $59.90 or $718.80 per child per year. Starting this fall, an average family with two children could save approximately $1,400 a year.

“Free transit for youth is a great opportunity for Brandon families,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett, City of Brandon. “It means young people can get where they need to go whether that’s school, work, sports or spending time with friends without the added cost. We’re happy to see this program launch in Brandon and make getting around our community a little easier for families. Thank you to the Manitoba government for making this investment and working with us to bring free youth transit to Brandon.”

In Brandon, free transit will be available to youth ages six to 17. Youth aged 18 to 21 are also eligible if they are attending high school.
