On October 8, 2025, shortly after 10:00 a.m., Brandon Police Service responded to a report of an assault involving a 50-year-old female in the 2200 block of Rosser Avenue. The victim was transported by ambulance to Brandon Regional Health Centre for medical treatment. Investigation determined that the woman had been assaulted by her 28-year-old son following a dispute. It is believed the suspect used a metal bicycle pole—specifically, the seat post—as a weapon during the assault. The victim sustained a laceration to her chin, a swollen eye, and a sore jaw. No broken bones were reported. Within the hour, just after 11:00 a.m., officers located and arrested the 28-year-old male suspect. He was transported to BPS detention cells where he remained in custody for court. This file remains under investigation.

The City of Brandon and the Brandon Chamber of Commerce are excited to announce the launch of the 2025 Brandon Green Business Award. This annual award celebrates a local business that champions sustainability, water conservation, or waste reduction through their own innovative efforts. To qualify, businesses must describe an initiative, or set of initiatives, that goes beyond their normal operations and is not mandated by any federal, provincial, or municipal law, by-law, or regulatory body. Eligible businesses of any size must be located within Brandon city limits. Examples of green initiative ideas include: Becoming a fair-trade workplace or retailer Switching to energy efficient bulbs or appliances where applicable Creative ways to reuse/recycle goods, products, or materials Encourage or implement a green commuting strategy Water conservation These suggestions are just a starting point—businesses are encouraged to get creative and produce their own unique sustainability efforts! Applications are due by Thu, Oct. 30, 2025. Submissions will be reviewed by a joint committee between the City of Brandon and Brandon Chamber of Commerce. The City of Brandon is pleased to announce that the outdoor sports facility located at First Street and Veterans Way, formerly known as the Maple Leaf Foods Sports Complex, has officially been renamed the Canada Packers Sports Complex. This renaming reflects recent spin-off of Canada Packers Inc. from Maple Leaf Foods Inc. The Canada Packers Sports Complex is set to be a cornerstone of recreation in the Westman Region, offering a FIFA-sized soccer field, up to eight 11 v 11 soccer fields, a dedicated 9 v 9 soccer field, a cricket pitch, a clubhouse with changerooms and washrooms, and 3.6 km of pathways. Supported by investments from the Governments of Canada and Manitoba, the City of Brandon anticipates completion of this project in 2026. “We’re proud to continue our partnership with what was formerly Maple Leaf Foods now under the Canada Packers banner,” said Mayor Jeff Fawcett. “Our partnership is strengthening the spaces that keep Brandon active and connected. The City of Brandon is announcing the permanent closure of its community recycling depots as part of a plan to improve recycling services and address ongoing operational challenges including the reduction of illegal dumping in our community. Effective Tue, Oct. 14, the recycling depot at the Keystone Centre will be permanently closed. By Fri, Nov. 14, the recycling depots at Brandon’s Community Sportsplex (rear of 30 Knowlton Dr.) and 34th St. and Victoria Ave (in the NE laneway) will also be permanently closed. Starting Oct. 15, 2025, residents are asked to bring their excess recyclable materials to the Eastview Landfill Site, located at 765 – 33rd St. E., where bins will be available outside the gate after hours 24/7 and inside the landfill during open hours, with no fee charged. Organic depot bins will also be removed for the season by Fri, Nov. 14. Depot locations can be found at brandon.ca/home-property-environment/garbage-recycling-and-composting/composting. Decisions regarding the future of the organic depot locations will be discussed as part of the 2026 municipal budget discussions. This decision to consolidate diversion services at the landfill comes after years of increasing contamination and illegal dumping at depot sites, which have resulted in unsightly messes, hazardous materials, and a significant rise in complaints from residents and businesses. The City remains committed to supporting positive environmental practices and will propose an enhanced diversion depot at the Eastview Landfill in 2026, with improved staffing and services to maximize recycling and minimize contamination. The Manitoba government has introduced new legislation to enshrine the current registered owner model into law, ensuring it remains the model used by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), Justice Minister Matt Wiebe, minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation, announced today. “Our government is making sure vehicle insurance rates remain affordable for Manitoba families,” said Wiebe. “By keeping MPI public and protecting the registered owner model, our government is ensuring stable, affordable insurance for Manitobans, now and in the future.” “We’re putting MPI back on track and protecting Manitobans from future attempts to raise rates on families through changes to the insurance model,” said Wiebe. “These new protections are part of our government’s way of saving Manitobans money, which includes freezing hydro rates, providing permanent gas tax relief, and maintaining some of the lowest car insurance rates in Canada.” The Manitoba Public Insurance Amendment Act (2) ensures that MPI remains stable, affordable and focused on serving Manitobans, the minister noted.
