64th annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament this weekend

The 64th annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament is set to tee off Friday morning at Clear Lake Golf Course. The Grey Owl, presented by IG Private Wealth Management, is one of the province’s longest running tournaments and is growing in popularity. This year’s tournament sold out well before the entry deadline, with 288 golfers having registered to play 36 holes over the three-day event. Defending champion Darcy Howarth of MacGregor will be looking to repeat after claiming the victory in cool and wet conditions. The last repeat winner was Jay Thiesen of Russell, who won in 2023 and 2024. Several defending champions will be in the field trying to dethrone Howarth, who was the first Grey Owl director to win the event. Garth Collings of Breezy Bend, who was won a record 11 Grey Owl titles, will tee off on Friday at 1 p.m. Other former champs include two-time winners Jared Jacobson of Brandon (2022, 2014) and Nick Myhre of Rolette, N.D., (2018, 2017), as well as Edmonton’s Trent Wood (2002), Brandon’s Murray Lindenberg (1978) and Calgary’s Jack McDiarmid (1974). In addition, 11 of the 15 players who made last year’s championship flight have returned to take a run at the Cactus Jack Wells Memorial Trophy, so the competition promises to be fierce. The Grey Owl, however, is for golfers with all types of swings. There will be 11 flight winners as well as a Greyer Owl champion for the best shooter age 60 and over. The annual Howl dinner and program will take place on Saturday night at Danceland in downtown Wasagaming, where the Grey Owl committee will name its annual Robert J. Picken Memorial Honour Award winner, conduct a 50/50 draw and give out several thousand dollars worth of draw prizes to lucky competitors. The first tee time on Friday is at 7 a.m. The low 16 and ties after the first round will make up the championship flight, which will tee off on Sunday morning at approximately 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.thegreyowl.ca or call/text Kirk Penton at 778-392-6175.

Assault with Weapon Investigation

On May 30th, 2026, at approximately 5:02 a.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting an injured male in the 200 block of 3rd Street. Officers located a 46-year-old male suffering from a significant head injury believed to have been caused by a machete. He was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre by ambulance for treatment of the non-life-threatening injury. The victim reported being attacked from behind while outside a residence in the 100 block of 4th Street with a friend. The victim was unable to identify the suspect. The 22-year-old male acquaintance who was present at the time of the incident declined to provide a statement or further information to investigators. Police conducted an extensive investigation, including a Police Service Dog track from the location where the victim was found. The track led officers to a residence in the 100 block of 4th Street, where blood was observed in the yard and near the rear entrance. Five individuals, including the 22-year-old acquaintance, were detained from the residence. All detained suspects were later released once sober. Despite these efforts, investigators were unable to obtain information from the victim or witnesses that would assist in identifying a suspect. As all investigative avenues have been exhausted with the information available, the file has been closed.

Homeowner Assaulted After Discovering Trespasser Under Gazebo

On June 2nd at approximately 6:27 a.m., a homeowner in the 400 block of 12th Street reported that an unknown female was found in his backyard, under his gazebo. When the homeowner asked her to leave, she demanded his phone and then assaulted him by punching him in the face twice before leaving the property. The incident was recorded on the homeowner’s phone, allowing police to identify the suspect. Officers located and arrested the 33-year-old female within minutes of arriving at the residence. She was charged with Assault and later released on an Undertaking, with a scheduled court appearance on August 13th, 2026.

From Traffic Stop to Trafficking Charges, Traffic Stop Triggers Warrant Arrest and Trafficking Charges

Arrest Warrants Over the past 24 hours, six individuals were arrested on outstanding Warrants for Arrest. Three were held in custody for court appearances in the morning, while the remaining three were released on Appearance Notices with future court dates. An 18-year-old male was found to be wanted on a Warrant for Arrest, with pending charges of Assault, Possession of a Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Failure to Comply with an Undertaking, Assaulting a Peace Officer, Resisting a Peace Officer, and Failure to Attend Court. During the investigation, officers located a fanny pack containing approximately $1,600 in cash, 4 grams of cocaine packaged in 1-gram bags, packaging materials, and a digital scale. A 20-year-old male was also an occupant of the vehicle. As a result, both individuals were charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) with Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking, as well as Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. Officers determined that the suspect was the same individual involved in an earlier incident at a business in the 1000 block of 18th Street, where he threatened staff before leaving in a taxi. After identifying the 45-year-old male suspect, officers attended the residential area off Pacific Avenue in an effort to locate him. The suspect arrived at the location in a taxi and was arrested. He was transported to BPS detention cells and held for a court appearance scheduled for the morning of June 2nd, 2026. The 55-year-old male is scheduled to appear in court on the morning of June 2nd, 2026.
