Speed Limit in Forrest Reduced to 50 km/h for Safety

The Manitoba government has lowered the speed limit on Highway 10 through the village of Forrest to 50 km/h, a move that local officials and residents say has been a long time coming. The reduction, which took effect earlier this week, replaces the previous 70 km/h zone and is aimed at improving safety for pedestrians, particularly students crossing the highway between Elton Collegiate and Forrest Elementary School. The new traffic pattern now flows from 100 km/h outside the community, to 70 km/h on the outskirts, and down to 50 km/h through Forrest.

Province Advises New Rent Guideline for 2026

Manitoba Public Service Delivery advises the 2026 rent guideline has been set at 1.8 per cent, effective Jan. 1, 2026. Updated annually, the guideline is calculated using a transparent formula based on the consumer price index (CPI) for Manitoba. It applies to most residential rental properties including apartments, single rooms, houses and duplexes. The guideline does not apply to: rental units renting for $1,670 or more per month; various types of social housing; rental units owned and operated by, or for, provincial, municipal or federal governments; rental units in buildings first occupied after March 2005; not-for-profit life lease units; co-operative units; and approved rehabilitated rental units. Tenants must receive written notice of a rent increase at least three months before the increase takes effect. For example, for a rent increase to take effect Jan. 1, 2026, tenants must receive notice by Sept. 30, 2025. With few exceptions, rent can only be increased once a year. Landlords and tenants are encouraged to contact the Residential Tenancies Branch at 204-945-2476 in Winnipeg or 1-800-782-8403 (toll-free in Manitoba) to learn more about rent increases and other rights and responsibilities. Two Male Suspects Charged Following Willowdale Crescent Assault and Robbery

On August 25th at approximately 2:05 AM, police responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Willowdale Crescent. Initial information suggested no criminal activity had occurred, and parties had dispersed without further issue. The building manager attended, and no disclosures were made at that time. Later that morning, at 10:25 AM, a male attended the Brandon Police Service and reported that he had, in fact, been assaulted during the earlier incident. He advised that suspects had entered his apartment, attempted to strike him with a wine bottle, and physically assaulted him by punching him in the face and torso. The assault allegedly continued outside the apartment, during which one of the suspects used a fork as a weapon. Police later recovered the fork. During the altercation, the victim’s phone—which also contained his identification—fell to the ground and was taken by the suspects. Later that day, the stolen phone was left at the residence of the victim’s sister, where the suspects entered without permission. Surveillance footage was obtained, and the two primary suspects were identified and contacted. They later attended voluntarily, where they were arrested without incident. A 22-year-old male has been charged with: Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Break and Enter and Commit Assault, Robbery with Violence and Unlawfully in a Dwelling. A 26-year-old male has been charged with the same offences. Both individuals were released on Undertakings with conditions. Their next court appearance is scheduled for October 30, 2025.

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrests, Weapons and Cannabis Charges on 5th Street

On August 26th at 9:58PM a traffic stop was conducted in the 100 block of 5th Street. The passenger in the vehicle was found to have a Warrant for his Arrest (Theft Under $5000). As the passenger got out of the vehicle a jar of cannabis was seen on the front passenger seat area.  Further search found a pair of brass knuckles. The 33-year-old male was arrested on the strength of the Dauphin Endorsed Warrant, and charged for Failure to Comply with Probation Order, Failure to Comply with Weapons Prohibition, Possession of Prohibited Weapon, and issued a ticket for Possession of Cannabis that is not Packaged, Labelled or Stamped. The male was held in BPS detention cells and will attend court in the morning on August 27th, 2025. The 38-year-old female driver was arrested and charged for Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (no one would take ownership of the brass knuckles, so both were charged), and issued tickets for Possession of Cannabis that is not Packed, Labelled or Stamped, Unlawful Transportation of Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle, and for Driving while Disqualified. She was released on an Undertaking with a court date of November 6th, 2025.

The individual also reportedly made verbal threats during the altercation. Officers attended the scene, and the male was subsequently charged. He was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on November 3, 2025.
