Dakota Nation Winterfest 2020, a combination of cultural and aboriginal sports

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation will be holding their annual “Dakota Nation Winterfest” for four days inside the Keystone Centre starting January 30, 2020. The event is a long standing tradition in Western Manitoba and is a combination of cultural and aboriginal sports. Now in it's 48th year the festival encompasses activities and events for all age groups including a square dance competition, talent show, wacipi, basketball, volleyball and moccasin games. One of the more popular events each year is the adult and minor hockey tournaments drawing teams from all over Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The men's hockey tournament is especially popular and brings in players with WHL and Jr. A hockey experience.

Police: Man under the influence of meth enters residential care home, pushes staff member

Source: Brandon Police Service Media Release At 11:00 a.m. Friday, a disturbance occurred at a residential care home for the elderly in the city. A 41-year-old Brandon male, under the influence of meth, had entered the building and was attempting to gain entry to a locked office and resident’s rooms when a staff member confronted the male. The male fled the building after pushing the staff member, and taken into custody by police a few blocks away from the incident. No other persons in the building confronted the suspect or had contact with him. Police held the male at the Brandon Correction Centre to appear in court today, where he is facing one count of assault and one count of mischief to property.

Two Arrested Following Traffic Stop

Source: Brandon Police Service Media Release On October 1, 2019, police received a report of the theft of tools and a vacuum from a business in the 800 block of 18th street, which occurred on September 29, 2019. Employees provided police with video surveillance of the theft which showed a male and a female were responsible. On October 2, 2019, at approximately 9:30 pm, police conducted a traffic stop in the 900 block of Kirkaldy Ave. The passenger of the vehicle was the subject of an outstanding Arrest Warrant for Distribute Intimate Images, and Fail to attend Court. He was also the subject of the above noted theft from a business. The 36-year-old male passenger was arrested and searched. A small amount of Meth and approximately $300 cash was located on him. He will appear in court on both November 14 and December 2, 2019 on the warrant charges, Possession of a Controlled Substance - Meth, Possession of Proceeds of Crime and Theft under $5000. The 36-year-old female driver was identified as the second suspect in the above noted theft. She too was arrested and found to be in possession of Meth, a baseball bat and bolt cutters. The clothing she was wearing at the time still had prices tags on them, and were reportedly stolen from a local business. She was to abide by conditions not to possess any drugs or weapons. She was lodged at Brandon Correctional Centre and will appear in court today on charges of Theft under $5000 X2, Possession of Break-in Instruments, Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Controlled Substance- Meth, and Breach of Recognizance X 2.

City Bus & Pickup Collide

Late Wednesday afternoon, Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and Brandon Police Services responded to a two-vehicle crash that happened on 18th St, in front of Home Hardware. A city transit bus and a pickup truck collided. Front driver's side damage was visible on the bus, and back passenger side damage was visible on the pickup truck. Nobody was taken to hospital. Brandon man arrested for fraudulent credit card use

Source:Brandon Police Service Media Release An ongoing investigation into the Fraudulent Use of Credit Card and Debit Card at two businesses led police to the arrest of the suspect. On October 1, 2019, the 60-year-old male suspect contacted police himself shortly before 7:00 pm to report suspicious activity that he was witnessing, separate from the invesigation into the use of credit cards. He was located and arrested for his involvement in the frauds. He will appear in court on November 25, 2019.
