Source:  Brandon Police Service Media Release The Brandon Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing youth. Echo Tacan, 17 years of age. Echo has been missing since July 27th, 2018. She was last seen wearing grey sweatpants and a pink zip-up hoodie. She is described as Aboriginal, 5’6” (167 cm), 185 lbs (84 kg), medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. Echo’s current whereabouts are unknown and it is possible that she may also be in the province of Saskatchewan. A photo of Echo from July, 2018 is included with this release. We are asking that anyone with information about Echo Tacan’s current whereabouts is asked to call the Brandon Police Service at 204-729-2345.

Shortly after 5pm Thursday evening, Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and Brandon Police Service responded to the intersection of 4th St and College Ave for a two-vehicle collision involving a small car and a pickup truck. It appeared as though one vehicle struck a telephone pole, and/or it's guy-wire, prompting the response from Manitoba Hydro. Firefighter/paramedics used extrication tools to remove an occupant from the small car. The occupant who was extricated was transported to hospital.   Photos by: Liam Pattison Photography.

Source:  Brandon Police Service Media Release An ongoing Police investigation from September 11th, Brandon Police Service had received a file from Toronto Police in relation to a fraud. On June 19th 2018, the victim contacted Toronto Police to report that her email had been hacked. The suspect posed as the victim, who is the Chair of a pension company, emailed the secretary of the company requesting to pay a vendor $2500. The secretary thought the request was legitimate as it came from the victim’s email and e-transferred the money. The e-transfer was traced to the suspect’s bank account by the Police. On Wednesday September 19th, Police located, arrested and released a 52yr old Brandon woman to appear in Court on November15th.

Minnedosa area residents have long-known about the uniqueness and success of Skate The Lake.   Now the rest of the Province knows this as well.   Skate The Lake and Minnedosa Minor Hockey's collaboration was the winner of the "Partnership Award" at the 2018 Travel Manitoba Tourism Awards.   Minnedosa's event beat out the Eriksdale Creamery Days Fair & Rodeo and Winnipeg's Buhler Recreation Park for the Award.   The nomination for this Award was made by Chantelle Parrott, EDO with Minnedosa & Area Community Development Corporation. In her nomination, Chantelle states "The partnership between Skate The Lake and Minnedosa Minor Hockey provides a large volunteer base for this annual event designed to promote Minnedosa and the surrounding area as a tourism destination. The partnership has enabled the event to grow in size and scope, bringing team from further away as it becomes an annual winter celebration of the Canadian tradition of pond hockey in rural Manitoba."   Skate The Lake is a volunteer-run, non-profit pond hockey tournament. The tournament takes place on Lake Minnedosa which the Town of Minnedosa prepares the rinks so that multiple games can be played at once. The non-contact, 4-on-4 format features customized nets instead of goalies and special rules to ensure safety and fair play. Lake Minnedosa provides the natural setting needed to hold a successful event. There is no question that our Lake exceeds any other venue out there for an event of this nature.   Skate The Lake was (according to her husband Dan shared with attendees at the 2018 Travel Manitoba Tourism Awards Dinner), the brainchild of Gaylene Johnson. Gaylene was on the Board of the Minnedsoa Community Childcare Cooperative to establish a much-needed Community Daycare in our community. They were looking at ways to raise money for this project. She saw an article in magazine that talked about a Pond Hockey Tournament in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick. Gaylene said to Dan "If they can do something like that in a place like Plaster Rock, why the heck can't we do something like that here in Minnedosa and raise funds for the Daycare?" They pulled together a group of common-minded friends and got to work. The incredibly cold temperatures did not stop our teams, volunteers and organizers from having a great time while support the efforts of the Minnedosa Community Childcare Cooperative. The first Skate The Lake donated $2,700 was donated to the Minnedosa Community Childcare Cooperative.   The partnership between Skate The Lake and Minnedosa Minor Hockey was started in 2010 for the 4th Annual Event. Minor Hockey in Minnedosa was shut-down for the weekend. Minor hockey parents and families volunteered at the event to provide much-needed assistance. With a larger group of volunteers working together to promote and run the event, Skate The Lake was able to donate $8,000 to the Minnedosa Regional Events Centre Project.   Skate The Lake is successful because of all the community partners that assist with the event. The event would not happen without their contributions of time, equipment, staff and volunteers. We are grateful for the support we get from so many different groups and organizations.   In 2018, Skate The Lake added a new component and activity - Rock The Lake. Rock The Lake is two-person stick-curling on Lake Minnedosa. The event proved to be popular with curlers and non-curlers alike.   Proceeds from the 2018 Skate The Lake/ Rock The Lake Event were $12,000.   Since its inception in 2006, Skate The Lake has donated close to $100,000 to community projects.   The 13th Annual Skate The Lake / Rock The Lake will take place February 16 and 17, 2019.

Source: ACC Blog Assiniboine Community College has doubled the first-year intake of both its Culinary Arts and Hotel & Restaurant Management programs this year at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts (MICA). As a result, events that underscore the programs’ curriculum have increased to ensure that every student has authentic ‘learn by doing’ experiences. “These events are integral to the curriculum in our hospitality programs, and we appreciate the public’s unwavering support over the years to attend,” said Dave Perkins, Interim Dean of Agriculture & Environment. “Tickets and reservations to events at MICA sell out quickly year after year, so it’s a bonus for the community that there are more opportunities to secure tickets to events this academic year.” First up in the MICA event season is Harvest on the Hill, an annual fall event where students present beers from around the globe and highlight locally grown food pairings. The event is held near the college’s sustainable greenhouse at the North Hill campus in Brandon and offers the public the chance to explore current applied research projects underway in between bites and sips. This year, a second night has been added to Harvest on the Hill, meaning those interested can call in for tickets to attend either October 11 or 12at the cost of $75/person. Phone lines for tickets open at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 20. Guests must be 18 or older to attend. Holiday Buffet, which features traditional and contemporary holiday dishes, will follow on December 12 and 13. In the New Year, the college’s treasured Grey Owl restaurant will have six additional nights, adding weekend reservations into the mix. That event is scheduled to run January 21 to February 15, 2019. And rounding out the academic year is the International Wine & Food Festival, which will have a second night added and run April 25 and 26, 2019.
