Brandon Police Service Media Release Motor Vehicle Accident with Injuries: At approximately 8:37 p.m., emergency services responded to a three-vehicle accident on Kirkcaldy Drive. Early investigation indicates that a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 27-year-old man was west bound on Kirkcaldy Drive and collided with a small SUV driven by a female as she was making a North bound turn onto Cater Drive. The Pontiac Grand Prix then collided with a Minivan driven by a female that was eastbound on Kirkcaldy Drive. All three vehicles were damaged extensively from the collision. STARS transported the driver of the Pontiac Grand Prix to hospital in Winnipeg with severe injuries. The male remains in hospital and serious condition. In total, nine people were involved in the accident with six people transported and admitted to hospital. One of the injured is a 5-year old child who sustained a head injury. The child is in stable condition. Brandon Police Collision Analysts attended the accident scene and continue to investigate. Speed, alcohol and drug use are believed to be factors in the accident with charges against the male driver of the Pontiac Grand Prix pending. Kirkcaldy Drive was closed from Fraser Crescent to Patterson Crescent but is now open again to the public.

Tara Roe, who was from Okotoks Alberta and originally from Brandon, was one of the 59 people who died Sunday night in Las Vegas while attending the "Route 91 Harvest Festival".  Tara (formerly known as Tara Smith) was the 4th reported Canadian killed in the mass murder. Another former Brandon resident Jesse Zetariuk recalled his interactions and memories of “Smitty”.  “What can I say she was a fantastic mom and her two boys loved her without condition.  She was an amazing mother” said Zetariuk. Jesse said that Tara was a super mom attending hockey, baseball and lacrosse practices and games.  But when it came to dancing, Jessie said it wasn't one her Tara’s strongest features.  “She was always on the dance-floor but a really bad dancer....but always the life of the party”. Zetariuk became friends with Tara at the age of 12 as she was best friends with his sister.  “Her husband Zach is just an amazing guy…and Tara always had your back” continued Zetaiuk. Jesse summed up his comments about Tara with a single statement “ She had the heart the size of a pickup truck”. Manitobans will see a minimum wage increase on Oct. 1 as a result of The Minimum Wage Indexation Act, Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Blaine Pedersen announced today. “Improving wages for working Manitobans is important to us,” said Pedersen.  “The Minimum Wage Indexation Act provides a consistent and predictable way of indexing minimum wage with inflation through a fully transparent formula.  It ensures Manitobans are able to take home more of their hard-earned money, while providing predictability for businesses that create jobs and generate growth in our economy.” Pedersen noted the increase of 15 cents per hour will raise the current minimum wage to $11.15 from $11.00 and ensure that Manitoba remains competitive with other provinces in its minimum wage. The Minimum Wage Indexation Act provides a consistent and predictable way of indexing Manitoba’s minimum wage based on the change in the previous calendar year’s Consumer Price Index.  Beginning in 2018, any adjustments to the minimum wage will be announced prior to April 1 to take effect on Oct. 1 of each year. “This legislation provides a balanced, common sense approach,” said Pedersen.  “It is in line with other provinces and reflects our government’s commitment to workers, their families and small businesses throughout Manitoba.” Information on the minimum wage and other employment standards is available at www.gov.mb.ca/labour/standards.
