Late Sunday night Brandon emergency crews were called to the 800 block of Assiniboine Avenue for a fire. A motorhome was well involved with fire upon arrival of fire crews, as well as the neighbouring building that is home to Assiniboine Collision & Glass. Fire from the motorhome made its way into the roof of the business which appeared to cause a partial collapse of the roof structure. Firefighters made a hole in the roof and began dousing the flames that were underneath the metal roofing. No reports of injuries so far, and no word on what caused the fire.

Manuliak’s Special Olympics BBQ

Manitoba Special Olympics BBQ will be happening Saturday August 19th from 12pm - 4pm at the Discovery Centre.   Below is the information about the event's 10 year history. Heather and Murray Manuliak, along side myself started this fundraiser for Special Olympics Manitoba 10 yrs ago pre covid (13 including) as my 3 older sons are athletes and my father participates in the world's largest truck ride out of Winnipeg for the past 10 yrs. To date we have raised a little over $50,000 to help athletes in Manitoba have little to no cost for programs offered to them. myself, I am a 10 pin bowling coach along side with Arlene and Keith taggart who will be there with us helping us out as they have the past 6+ years. Some programs we have are 5 &10 pin bowling, bocce ball, golf, baseball, curling, floor hockey, soccer, snow shoeing, swimming, just to name a few. We do fundraising here in Westman to help raise awareness to those parents who do not know Brandon has a chapter of Special Olympics for those with intellectual disabilities. The last 10 years I have seen my 3 boys flourish in the community as a person and a member of the community in school and at home. they used to be very quiet and reserved, now they are out going and feel like they belong. We started out at the Capitol theatre selling just hotdogs and drinks over the years we have expanded to include the road rebels car club, kids zone (bouncy castles, face painting, games) police and fire will be there when they get a chance to show up (due to emergency they will come when possible) we have the Batchery ice cream truck with us, silent auction, 50/50 tickets, a few food items to choose from. pulled pork, burgers, smokies. we also have an awesome fridge that was wrapped for a bid item. highest bid takes the fridge. and trophies for 8 categories for the car show, new this year with the car show is learn your vehicle . a few displays and demos of certain basics for owning a vehicle.
