Santa will be making his annual visit to the Wheat City during the Brandon Santa Parade which is scheduled to take place on November the 19th starting at 6 pm. A variety of floats will be on-hand along the parade route which covers several blocks along Rosser and Princess Avenues. As one of the most exciting community events in Brandon each year the parade would not be possible without the assistance from numerous local businesses, charities, schools and sponsors along with volunteers from the community. Parade spectators are welcome to bring a non-perishable food item in support of Canada Post and their food drive. Items will be picked up along the parade route for Christmas Cheer. Brandon City Transit will be offering FREE bus rides the day of the parade from 5pm to midnight on ALL bus routes!   Kids are encouraged to come out and watch the “parade of lights” and sounds leading up to the evenings very special guest Santa Claus .

Changes to a couple of businesses on Brandon's North Hill. The United Furniture Warehouse location has completed it's transition into the Brick, leaving Brandon with two Brick locations to do your furniture shopping. Peavey Mart is now also occupying the spot which once housed TSC. Zorzos Auto appears poised to to move into their new location at 1530-17th St North in the next 7-10 days.     A familiar face in the taxicab industry has resurfaced as Dean Zimmer recently opened the Wheat City Elite Cab company. Baron Thompson quietly found himself back on the Wheat King roster after having been previously re-assigned earlier in the season. Duncan Campbell, a victim of 20-year old roster restrictions of the WHL, will be joining the Pentiction Vee's of the BCHL. Former Wheat King Kelly Glowa continues to drink from the fountain of youth. The now 53 year old, has recorded 8 points in just 2-games with the Boissevain Border Kings of the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Joining him this season with the Border Kings is another former Wheat King, Chris Low, who has amassed 5-points in 2-games to date. The BU Bobcats ladies soccer team are the 2016 MCAC Women's Soccer Champions after defeating the Red River College Rebels 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Brandon's Jaycee Castle was named the tournament MVP.

Of course, there are things that we want to work on for next year but we are committed to growing together. The amazing part about this event is the volunteers it takes to make it all happen.Between all of the groups, we roughly estimated that it takes close to 50,000 hours of volunteer time to put this all together. “ Manitoba AG EX runs through the day on Saturday with the Gelbvieh, Shorthorn and Commercial breed shows as well as the Jr. Showmanship, Prospect Steer/Heifer and Supreme Breed shows. Sioux Valley Dakota Nation will be holding their annual “Dakota Nation Winterfest” for three days inside Westman Communications Group Place starting January 27th, 2017. The event is a long standing tradition in Western Manitoba and is a combination of cultural and aboriginal sports. Now in it's 45th year the festival encompasses activities and events for all age groups including a square dance competition, talent show, strong man competition, volleyball and moccasin games. One of the more popular events each year is the adult and minor hockey tournaments drawing teams from all over Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The Sr. Mens hockey tournament is especially popular and brings in players with WHL and Jr. A hockey experience. New to this years event will be a 3 on 3 basketball competition. Attendance at last years event was estimated to be near 30,000 people.

Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Manitoba issued letters to Hotels and Restaurants which have VLT machines that changes are coming. Since 1991 Manitoba VLT’s maximum spin was $1.25 and in 2017 the spin maximum will increase to $2.50 Maximum payouts will increase to $2500.00 per win (currently the maximum win is $1,000.00) These changes are due to the increase in casino’s in Manitoba and the fact that customers are now travelling more to one of the 5 Manitoba based casino’s, or travelling out of province.  Local smaller hotels that need this revenue source for remain in business have felt a change in revenue over the past few years. Nobody from Lotteries & Gaming Authority would comment on this story plus Addictions Foundation of Manitoba also refused to make a comment at this stage. A hotel owner from outside of Brandon stated he feels the new changes will not make a big difference “ people only have so much money maybe they will just spend it quicker now”. He also informed BDNMB.CA that people will have a few drinks and now maybe they won’t be doing this. Another hotel owner from the Interlake told us tonight his concern was about having more cash on hand for ATM Machines and payouts as most customers want cash and not a cheque if they win. “ With more cash on hand it is possible to see more hold ups that have happened in Selkirk and Lockport over the past 12 months."
