Bodies of four missing canoeists recovered from Burntwood River, north of Thompson

Police in Thompson are reporting the deaths of 4-canoers who were out paddling on the Burntwood River, North of the City of Thompson, on Monday the 22nd. Police were initially alerted of the group who were overdue. Two rescue boats and a helicopter soon joined the search, as did several people boating in the area. Eventually the canoe was located overturned in the river, and all four canoers were found deceased in the water. “This is the worst result imaginable. Thank you to everyone involved in the search. This is a devastating accident that has left the community of Thompson in mourning,” said Sergeant Ben Sewell of the Thompson RCMP. All 4 male victims (aged 6, 14, 33, and 44) were from Thompson, and all were reported as wearing flotation devices.  The deceased have now been identified as a pair of father and sons in Conor Sykes and his six-year-old son Liam, along with Shane Cripps and his 14-year-old son, Dylan.  

Brandon man, 37, charged after Amber Alert ends with toddler found safe

Police in northern Ontario say that a girl who was abducted in Rainy River, near the Manitoba boundary has been found safe. Ontario Provincial Police say they were called to a Chapple Township residence Saturday night and police learned a man fled the scene in a vehicle with a 3-year-old girl. The amber alert was activated early Sunday morning at around 3:00 am, and Police later issued an update on social media at 7:35 a.m. saying the girl was found. A 37-year-old male from Brandon Man. has been charged with: Three counts of Assault One count of Choking to overcome resistance One count of mischief One count of take motor vehicle without consent One count of drive motor vehicle with more than 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood Fail to properly wear seat belt Novice driver related offences

Robbery with Violence / Forcible Confinement

Brandon Police Service Media Release A 21-year old Brandon female has been arrested for Transportation by Fraud and held at the Brandon Police Service. Police say they received a call from a local taxi-cab company saying that a women had bailed out of one of their cabs, once the fee got to a $100. She was eventually located by Police at 10th Street and Victoria Avenue. Upon her arrest it was determined that the suspect was already part of a previous investigation dating back to May 7th 2017. As part of the May 7th investigation, a man reported to Police that he had answered an online ad for companionship, met the female and her friend, and was taken to an apartment. As they approached the apartment he told Police he was approached by two men with machetes, who tied his hands and legs, and forced to provide his bank card and pin #. The bank card was then used to make purchases at several local businesses. He further alleges that he was injected with drugs and told to withdraw another large sum of money. Police continue to investigate this matter and identify the three other suspects. The 20-year-old female from Brandon was arrested for Forcible Confinement, Robbery with Violence and Extortion as result of this investigation. She was to appear in Brandon court on Friday.
