Manitoba Government Invests $100,000 to Replace Brandon University Observatory Dome

The Manitoba government is partnering with Brandon University to replace the Gulliver Astronomical Observatory’s telescope dome to ensure future generations can use Manitoba’s largest public telescope, Advanced Education and Training Minister Renée Cable and Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today. “For over half a century, the telescope at the Gulliver Astronomical Observatory opened a window to the galaxy for Westman’s scientific community. It has invited students, researchers and community members to witness countless astronomical events first-hand,” said Cable. “This investment will protect valuable equipment while improving safety for staff and visitors, allowing Manitobans to see the stars for years to come.” The Manitoba government is providing $100,000 in funding toward the dome replacement, which supplements a $50,000 donation from Brandon University astronomy professor Dr. Austin Gulliver’s family. “By investing in the replacement of the observatory dome, our government is helping ensure this unique educational and community resource continues to inspire curiosity, discovery and wonder,” said Simard. The university installed its original rooftop telescope and dome in 1971. The university replaced the telescope in 2009 with a computerized Ritchey-Chrétien model, which is 16 inches in diameter and provides observers the ability to image other planets and galaxies. The dome, which has not been replaced since 1971, is no longer weatherproof. It must also be manually opened and monitored from the roof, the ministers noted, which creates risks for staff and equipment. “Brandon University researchers tackle questions spanning from the soils of Manitoba to the stars in the furthest galaxies. This welcome investment from our partners at the Manitoba government, combined with the generosity of the Gulliver family and our other donors, will help open up a universe of new opportunities for our students and our community,” said Dr. Christine Bovis-Cnossen, president and vice-chancellor, Brandon University. The modern new dome will be weather-sealed, automated and connected to the internet so it can be operated remotely and protected from environmental damage, while allowing students, researchers and the public to watch the telescope’s live view online.

When a snow clearing operation commences, the City will share the proposed schedule on its news feed at brandon.ca/news, as well as on its Facebook and Instagram accounts. Daily updates will be provided at 2 p.m. throughout active snow clearing operations. Once crews have completed snow clearing operations in your area, any missed areas can be reported online at brandon.ca/report-an-issue. About Snow Clearing Operations Snowfall accumulation, snow density, humidity, fluctuating temperatures, wind velocity and direction, along with the time of year, all influence the City’s response to snow events. The City uses a priority-based system for street clearing, determined by street classification and traffic volume. Street clearing operations always begin with Priority 1A Route, which includes key streets, sidewalks, and walking paths to ensure safe and efficient mobility for all. In emergency situations, snow removal equipment may be redirected as necessary to support police, fire, or ambulance response vehicles. More information about priority routes is available at brandon.ca/roads-parking-transportation/snow-clearing. Parking Restrictions During Snow Clearing Operations The City has an established snow route parking ban, which is in effect annually from Nov. 15 to Mar. 31, between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. After more than 5 cm of snow and/or winds that cause drifting on snow routes, the City’s Public Works Department may declare a parking restriction. Vehicles parked along designated snow routes during restrictions risk being ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense during a snow event. Designated Snow Routes: Rosser Ave.: 1st St. - 34th St.; and 1st St. E. - 13th St. E. Princess Ave.: 1st St. - 18th St.; 18th St. - Whillier Dr.; 1st St. E. - 13th St. E.
