WCGtv wins Volleyball Manitoba Award

Technical Producer Brad Smith and Team Lead Vern Riddle are joined alongside Bobcat head coach Grant Wilson. Volleyball Manitoba's 2025 Annual Awards and Hall of Fame Ceremony was held Sunday, June 8 in Winnipeg with WCGtv/Westman Communications Group earning volunteer of the year honours. WCGtv has been providing Brandon University Bobcat coverage for close to 40 years and that loyal service was on full display for the entire country to see. A talented crew of 24 staff members – the overwhelming majority being volunteers – assembled to produce 11 matches for the U SPORTS Men's Volleyball Championship – presented by Sunrise Credit Union from March 21-23. Over 200 hours of pre-production went into the lead up for nationals and 13 cameras were utilized during the tournament to provide fans with the best viewing experience possible. Brad Smith served as technical director at nationals and during the Canada West regular season he is in the director's chair. Smith works alongside play-by-play announcer Tyler Crayston to produce 10-minute pre-game shows for each game and together build a rundown that includes graphics and in-house produced videos that feature both the host Bobcats and visiting teams. During the near 40-year run, on-air talent has included Jeremy Sawatzky; legendary basketball coach Jerry Hemmings; former Bobcat volleyball star Brendan White; current Winnipeg Wesmen SID David Larkins, Volleyball Manitoba Hall of Famer Kevin Neufeld and Vegas Golden Knights' broadcast host Daren Millard. Over the last 10 years, Bobcat volleyball alum Pat Thompson has been a staple on Canada West TV broadcasts and was on the call during the historic gold medal match won by the host Bobcats. In the early years of the partnership, WCGtv also teamed up with Assiniboine College media production students to give them an opportunity to develop their skills before heading out into the work force. WCGtv has earned multiple accolades following the 2024-25 season. BU Athletics also honoured the broadcast team with the Bobcat Booster of the Year award back in April. Howarth wins 63rd Grey Owl

PHOTO: Grey Owl president Tyler Thompson, left, presents the Cactus Jack Wells Memorial Trophy to champion Darcy Howarth. Darcy Howarth went wire-to-wire to win the 63rd annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament on Sunday in soggy conditions at Clear Lake Golf Course. The 50-year-old from MacGregor was able to keep his hands dry enough in rainy and cool conditions to capture his first Grey Owl tournament, presented by IG Private Wealth Management. Howarth, who went into the final round with a one-shot lead over St. Charles’ Curtis Markusson, carded a 4-over-par 76 to win by three. Howarth’s 69-76—145 total was three strokes better than two-time champion Jared Jacobson of Brandon, who shot 77 on Sunday to go along with his first-round 71 for a 148 aggregate. It was sweet redemption for Howarth, who was in contention last year after an opening-round 71 but struggled to a 94 on Sunday. He also became the first director to win the tournament. “It’s hard to believe,” Howarth said. “I’ve been coming to this tournament for 20 years, and I love it. It’s fun, and I’m here to have a good time, and I never thought I’d compete or win it.” The conditions got the best of most golfers on Sunday, with the temperature hovering around 8 C and conditions that were both rainy and windy. Howarth had a two-stroke lead over Jacobson with three holes to go, and he stretched it to three with a par on 16 after Jacobson three-putted. The decisive shot was a wedge to five feet on the par-3 17th that he drained for a birdie and a four-shot edge he did not relinquish. Two-time tournament winner Nick Myhre of Rolette, N.D., Dave Spurr of Elmhurst and Jay Thiesen, whose two-year reign as champ came to an end, all tied for third. Brandon’s Ron Cornell won the Greyer Owl division for golfers 60 and over after firing a sparkling 71 on Sunday. His 71-78—149 total gave him a four-stroke victory. The Grey Owl tournament consists of 36 holes played over three days. All scores can be found later Sunday at thegreyowl.ca. FINAL SCORES Darcy Howarth, MacGregor 69-76—145 Jared Jacobson, Brandon 71-77—148 Nick Myhre, Rolette, N.D. 75-75—150 Dave Spurr, Elmhurst 76-74—150 Jay Thiesen, Russell 72-78—150 Curtis Markusson, St. Charles 70-81—151 Marcus Friess, Estevan, Sask. 73-79—152

Grey Owl Saturday report

MacGregor’s Darcy Howarth will have the lead going into the second and final round of the 63rd annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament, presented by IG Private Wealth Management. No player on Saturday could match Howarth’s opening round of 3-under 69 at Clear Lake Golf Course. Two-time defending champion Jay Thiesen of Russell carded the best round on Saturday, shooting an even-par 72 to sit three strokes back going into the final round. Howarth and Thiesen on Sunday will play in the final group along with St. Charles’ Curtis Markusson, who shot 70 on Friday, and Brandon’s Jared Jacobson, who carded a 71, also on Friday. Thiesen will attempt to become just the second player in Grey Owl history to win three consecutive titles. Breezy Bend’s Garth Collings has accomplished the feat twice. A victory on Sunday would give him five tournament wins, which would leave him third behind Collings (11) and Jim Scissons (seven). Jacobson has won the Cactus Jack Wells Memorial Trophy twice (2022 and 2014), while Markusson is a former Canadian mid-master men’s champion. Two-time winner Nick Myhre of Rolette, N.D., shot a 75 on Saturday and will play in the penultimate group. Four shots back of Howarth are Breezy Bend’s Todd Slatnik and Marcus Friess of Estevan, Sask. Another Saturday highlight was the second hole-in-one in as many days on the 138-yard, par-3 12th hole. Shilo’s Braydon Nault used a 9-iron to record the ace and to gain free entry into next year’s tournament. Owl trophies will be given to 10 other flight winners and the Greyer Owl champion for those age 60 and over. Sunday’s tee times and more information can be found at thegreyowl.ca. Howarth leads 63rd Grey Owl

Photo: Grey Owl Golf Tournament MacGregor’s Darcy Howarth fired an eagle and five birdies en route to a 3-under-par 69 on Friday to grab the Day 1 lead at the 63rd annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament, presented by IG Private Wealth Management. Howarth carded nine-hole scores of 35 and 34 on beautiful Clear Lake Golf Course to post the lowest score of the day on a sunny and breezy afternoon. He has a one-shot lead over St. Charles’ Curtis Markusson and a two-shot edge over two-time winner Jared Jacobson of Brandon. Approximately two-thirds of the more than 265 golfers in the field played their first rounds on Friday, and the rest, including two-time defending champion Jay Thiesen of Russell, will play their opening 18 holes on Saturday morning. One-third of the field will play their second and final rounds later on Saturday. Markusson, who won the 2022 Canadian men’s mid-master amateur championship, had six birdies and four bogeys, shooting 35-35, while Jacobson produced five birdies and four bogeys to shoot nines of 35-36. The first day of the Grey Owl produced a memorable moment for Calgary’s Kris Collacott, who used a pitching wedge to record a hole-in-one on the 138-yard, par-3 12th hole. Collacott’s ace means he will gain free entry into next year’s Grey Owl. The tournament consists of 36 holes over three days. The low 16 and ties after the first round will make up the championship flight, which will tee off on Sunday morning. Players have the choice to opt out of the championship flight and play their second rounds on Saturday. Day 1 scores and Saturday’s tee times can be found at thegreyowl.ca.
