Bobcats supporting young cancer patient

BRANDON – The Bobcats are rallying around a young local cancer patient. Nine-year old Sophie Terasaki is battling a form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma -- the same type that the legendary Terry Fox had. The BU men's basketball team is looking to help by hosting a co-ed camp at the Healthy Living Centre on Sunday, August 25. Participants can attend for free, but are encouraged to donate in support of Sophie's family. "I read Sophie's story on her GoFundMe page and it hit home for me," said men's coach Gil Cheung. "I have two children of my own and I cannot imagine what her family is going through. Our community always comes together like no other when someone needs assistance. We will be thinking of Sophie with each shot we take." The camp runs 10am-1pm at the HLC on Sunday and is open for athletes in grades 2-12. For more information, email cheungg@brandonu.ca. Mealy, Drysdale named to Brandon AAA U18 Wheat King’s coaching staff

Travis Mealy & Dallas Drysdale will join head coach Curtis Brolund behind the bench of this year's Brandon AAA U18 Wheat Kings. In a posting on the team's Facebook page, Brolund stated "A key to the success of any hockey program is to have a coaching/management staff that is both knowledgeable and passionate about the game of hockey". Brolund was named the team's coach in May of this year. Mealy spent several seasons in the QMJHL as a player. Upon completion on his junior career he went on to play University hockey in Canada with the University of Manitoba Bisons. Drysdale spent four seasons patrolling the blueline in the MJHL, splitting time between the Dauphin Kings and OCN Blizzard. The Brandon AAA U18 Wheat Kings are coming off an incredible season in which they captured the league championship and attended Western Regionals in Tisdale Sk. Training camp opens Friday September 6th.

Wheat Kings name an Assistant GM, sign import forward

The Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that Finnish forward Marcus Kallionkieli has signed his transfer card and is expected to join the Wheat Kings in 2019-20. Kallionkieli was Brandon’s first selection in June’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft and was also a fifth round selection (139th overall) of Vegas in this year's National Hockey League draft. He will join goaltender Jiri Patera as one of the team's two imports. Patera spent last season in Brandon. “Marcus is a really talented player,” says Brandon general manager Darren Ritchie. “He’s a big body, skates well and has a heavy shot.” The organization also announced the appointment of Doug Gasper as the Western Hockey League club’s new Assistant General Manager. Gasper has spent time as a Western Canadian amateur scout for the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks. He also has several years of WHL scouting experience with the Prince Albert Raiders and the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Wheat Kings also made several other announcements during today's media reception including an update on season ticket sales (2,020) and the hiring of a new athletic therapist, William Sadonick-Carriere.
