Submitted This past weekend saw your local U14 Westman Magic Softball Team travel to Saskatoon to compete in the 2018 Presidents Tournament. The “A” level division brought in 16 teams from Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Your Westman Magic team selected from western Manitoba was well represented, going undefeated throughout the weekend, setting themselves up for the gold medal game Sunday night. The teams offensive power, active defense and leadership of the veteran players earned them a championship title and gold medal as they defeated Sherwood Park, Alberta 3-2.

Deer Ridge Golf Course is offering a Junior Summer league every Wednesday in July and August starting July 4th between 12:30-5:00pm. The league is designed for children aged 7-14.  The participants must be physically able to walk and play 9 holes without an adult. League is for kids with previous experience Fees include tournament style format event every Wednesday, lunch, tutorials to improve their golf game and an unlimited membership on non tournament days. The third and final week of the 2018 Source for Sports AAA Summer Hockey Challenge wrapped up today and featured three different female age groups. In the U8 Division, the MB Hawks (pictured above) toppled the North Stars 7-0 in a game played at Westoba Place.  Miley Sorin & Rowyn Street each potted 2 goals for the Hawks.  Street also added 2 assists.  Gabby Robbins, Casey O'Brien and Adriana Pepe added single markers for the Hawks who went undefeated over weekend.   Gina Plett made 6 saves to record the shutout.  In total the Hawks only surrendered 4 goals in the 5 games they played in over the 3 days. Maddie Kaiser picked up 3 goals and added an assist as the U10 Girls of the North upended the Sask Grrrowl by a score of 5-1.  Makenna Williment also had a big afternoon as she chipped in with 2 goals and an assist.  The Girls of the North earlier in the day defeated The Monsters 3-1 to advance to the afternoons final.  They suffered a hard fought 1-0 loss in their opening game of the tournament before rattling off 5 straight victories to repeat as the U10 Champions. The Southwest Storm received 4 goals and an assist from Hayley Kolosky as they cruised past the MB Hurricanes 11-4 in U12 action.  Sophia Anderson & Spring Mosset each added 2 goals for the Storm while Kamryn Cloet, Emily Malchuck, & Billie Baranyk each found the back of the net once.  Replying for the Hurricanes was Vanessa Moreira (2g),  Annika Russell and Addison Kartusch.  Grace Glover registered the win in net for the Storm.  The Hurricanes advanced to the afternoons final after a thrilling win in their semi final game earlier in the morning.  Down 3-0 with only 9 minutes left to play in the third they rallied to score 4 straight goals to upset the MB North Stars 4-3.

Starting May 1st, 2019 the all new Wendy's 3 on 3 Youth Hockey League will come to Brandon.  Only 9 skaters and 1 goalie per team means lots of ice time as well as time spent with the puck for each skater.  The league will only keep track of team standings and not record individual player stats making this a more fun league to play in. League Features: - League will run 6 weeks in total - Free League Jersey - Certified league officials - No weekend or long weekend games - Most games scheduled between Monday to Thursday nights - 10 league games plus playoffs for each team Additional information on the league will be available at www.aaahockey.com closer to the launch date.

The three champions crowned in their respective divisions of week 2 in the Source for Spots AAA Hockey Challenge all had one thing in common, they all went undefeated over the weekend.  Former NHL players Aaron Rome (2010 Ice Kings) and Josh Green (2010 MB Hawks) were each seen coaching teams in the 2010 bracket.  Former Wheat King power forward Tyler Coulter also coached a team, the 2005 Westman Winterhawks.  Coulter picked up his first win as a coach in the Source for Sports AAA Summer Challenge, improving his overall record to 1-11 in the process. In the 2010 age division the Ice Kings (pictured above) upended the Southwest Oil Caps 12-6 in one of the weekends finals.  The Ice Kings received a big game from Reid Nicol as he registered 4 goals and 3 assists in the divisions final contest.  Nicol was a dominant force all weekend amassing 29 points, in just 5 games played.  Braydon Watt (3g,1a) and Nash Lenton (2g,1a) had multiple point games as well.  Cooper Dryden picked up the win in net.  Zander Clarke and Markus Knaub both replied with 2 goals each for the Oil Caps. The Man-Sask Wolfpack (pictured above) had an easy time of it in the 2005 division as they clubbed Winnipeg Future Jets 10-1 in a game played at Westman Place.  Carter McKay picked up a hat trick while Dylan Price and Tyler Stevenson each chipped in with two of their own.  Single markers came off the sticks of Kersey Hollingshead, Colton Pushie & Carter Skarbon.  Won Huh was the lone skater to beat Wolfpack's goalie Walker Berner. In the weekends most competitive final, the Sask Grrrowl U14 female hockey team received 20 saves from goaltender Amaya Giraudier as they blanked the U14 Westman Jr. Wildcats 3-0.  Allee Gerrard, Kaitlyn Gilroy & Keara Merriman each dented the twine once in the win.  The Grrrowl only surrendered 4 goals all weekend in the 5 games they played in.
