Former Wheat King, Tyler Coulter is leaving the ECHL to attend the University of Calgary where he will suit-up for the Dinos hockey program. The forward had been skating with the Jacksonville Icemen where he had posted 4 points in 14 games this season. “I really enjoyed my time in Jacksonville, the fans were great and of course the weather is amazing” Coulter told bdnmb.ca. “Right now it is tough to get regular amounts of ice...so it's time to play in the CIS with the University of Calgary where I will be getting top 6 or 9 ice time” added Coulter. The Dinos are coached by Mark Howell, a one time coach in the Wheat King organization. Another former Wheat King, Jordan Papirny is one of the Dinos goalie.

Wheat Kings deal defenseman, Brandon product signs with Moose Jaw

Brandon, MB. – Brandon Wheat Kings’ General Manager Grant Armstrong has completed a Western Hockey League trade sending 20-year-old Defenceman Kade Jensen to the Victoria Royals in exchange for a 5th round draft pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. The Wheat Kings had until this Saturday to meet the WHL twenty year old limit of three players per roster.  The move leaves Brandon with Goaltender Logan Thompson, Defenceman James Shearer and Winger Evan Weinger as the team’s 20-year-old contingent. “The 20-year-old deadline is always one of the most difficult decisions each year as you see a veteran player leave your room.” Armstrong said. “Kade has been a great teammate during his time in Brandon and we wish him nothing but the best in Victoria”. Jensen, from Calgary, was originally acquired at last year’s WHL trade deadline deal with the Swift Current Broncos along with Goaltender Travis Child, a 2nd round pick in 2019 and a 5th round pick in 2018 draft in exchange for then 20-year-old Goaltender Jordan Papirny and a 4th round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. In 57 games with the Wheat Kings Jensen recorded 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points to go along with 99 penalty minutes. Anderson signs with Moose Jaw Calder Anderson, of Brandon, has signed a Standard Players Agreement with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL. The 5'9”, 155lb forward is currently playing with the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings and has recorded 24 points in 19 games. The 15-year old was selected 134th overall in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. The Warriors also announced the signing of Cory King from Souris. King currently laces them up for the AAA Midget Southwest Cougars where he has 15 points in 16 games. He was also drafted in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, 98th overall. “We are pleased to announce the signings of Cory King and Calder Anderson this afternoon. Both players have had excellent starts to their 15 year old years in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League with the Southwest Cougars and Brandon Wheat Kings respectively. Both Cory and Calder bring skill, compete, and a high hockey IQ to our club,” commented Warriors General Manager Alan Millar.

Headliners announced for annual Brandon Wheat Kings’ Sportsman’s Dinner

Brandon, MB. – Two nationally known hockey broadcasters headline plans for the 2018 Brandon Wheat Kings’ Q Country Sportsman’s Dinner, presented by TELUS, scheduled for Thursday, Feburary 8th in the Keystone Centre’s UCT Pavillion. Sportsnet’s John Shannon joins TSN’s Dennis Beyak as headliners for the event, which is held annually to raise money for the hockey club’s Scholarship Fund. Joining them at this year’s dinner will be comedian Graham Chittenden of Brantford, Ontario. Regarded as one of the industry’s brightest minds, Shannon has over thirty years of experience in overseeing the television production of regional and national National Hockey League games, including 23 Stanley Cup Finals. Before joining the NHL and NHL Network in 2008, he served as Vice President of Programming and Executive Producer of MLSE, overseeing the launch, implementation and operation of Leafs TV and Rapters NBA TV. Shannon, who joined the ranks of Rogers Sportsnet in 2009, spent six years as the executive producer of Hockey Night in Canada on CBC. As well, he’s been involved in the production of five Olympics, receiving an Emmy for his work on NBC’s coverage of hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Born and raised in Winnipegosis, Manitoba, Beyak began his play by play career with the Western Canada Hockey League’s Flin Flon Bombers. In addition to providing play by play commentary for the Saskatoon Blades, Victoria Cougars and Seattle Thunderbirds, he served as the television play by play voice for both the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, before returning to Manitoba when the Jets relocated from Atlanta. A former general manager of both the Tri-City Americans and TBirds, Beyak was named the WHL’s Executive of the Year in 1989, after serving as chairman of Seattle’s successful bid to host the Memorial Cup. This will be Beyak’s third appearance at the annual event and second since becoming the voice of the Jets in 2011. Batting “clean-up” at February’s event will be one of Canada’s most exciting comedic performers. A familiar face at the Just for Laughs festival, on television and on radio in programs such as Match Game and The Debaters, Chittenden has shared tours and stages with such stars as Howie Mandel, Andrea Martin and Louie Anderson to name a few. Graham has appeared in numerous comedy specials, including his own on The Comedy Network and has also spent time as a host on MTV Canada. A talented writer, he currently works on a number of programs, ranging from Mr. D and Still Standing on CBC. February’s dinner will be the 53rd in franchise history. The first was held in 1959 and featured former Blackhawk Bill Mosienko, all star pitcher “Lefty” Gomez and Father Athol Murray.
