Wheat Kings draft Russian defenceman, Patera inks deal with Vegas Golden Knights

The Brandon Wheat Kings drafted 17-year old Russian defenceman Yaroslav Busygin 39th overall in Tuesday's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. The  6’2”, 170 lb blueliner skated with 3-different teams in 2019/20, including time in Russia’s top junior hockey league. From Tuesday's release: “He’s a really dependable, smart defenceman who played the off side in a difficult league. We look forward to getting Yaroslav to Brandon and accustomed to our community”, says Wheat Kings General Manager, Darren Ritchie. Patera inks deal with Vegas Golden Knights 21-year-old Czech native Jiri Patera signed a 3-year entry level contract with the Vegas Golden Knights. Patera was a sixth-round pick (No. 161) by the Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Draft. He spent the past two seasons playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings and was recently named the WHL’s Eastern Conference Goaltender of the Year the 2019-2020 season.

Cartwright Minor Baseball receives funding from Westoba Inspire

Cartwright Minor Baseball is thrilled to receive $5600.00 from the Westoba Credit Union Inspire Program to build a shade canopy on the Cartwright Ball Diamonds this summer. “The ball diamonds are gathering place for our entire community,” said Pam Enns, Cartwright Minor Baseball volunteer. “This space is primarily used during ball season, but this project also provides a free picnic area with a view that can be used in rain, sun, wind, evening, and morning from April until October. “ COVID- 19 has impacted individuals, communities, events and businesses in many ways. Therefore, how we bring community together is ever-changing. “Westoba Credit Union is pleased to be able to support a project within the community of Cartwright that provides the opportunity for people to gather safely outside”, said Liz Roberts, Board Director and Westoba Community Investment Committee member. Completion of the sunshade is aimed at September 2020. The Minor Baseball Association will host a community gathering to celebrate the project once complete.

Brandon’s Jalyn Elmes signs deal to play professional hockey in Europe

Brandon’s Jalyn Elmes recently signed a deal to play professional hockey with Brynäs IF of the Swedish Women’s Hockey League. Elmes spent the past four seasons patrolling the blue-line for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Last season she registered 9-points in 36-games, while amassing 47 penalty minutes. Elmes was also captain of her team in her final two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Elmes spent several seasons with the Yellowhead Chiefs in the MFMHL.

Local summer hockey league entering 30th season in Brandon

Over the past several summers, numerous players with NHL, AHL, European League, WHL, NCAA, USHL, NAHL, MJHL and U18AAA experience have kept in game shape over the summer months grinding it out in the Wendy’s Summer Hockey League. The WSHL also caters to the “average joes” that wish to just keep playing the game at an organized level. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the WSHL was on hold in 2020 until the league could come up with plans to operate the league as safely as possible. In addition to having the necessary safety measures in place they had to also secure ice time.  Ice-times have been booked and the league will start play on July 15th and run until the end of August. Deadline to enter is July 1st.
