The MJHL held its annual bantam draft today in Selkirk and a number of Brandon and Westman hockey products were among the 66 players selected. The event which could be viewed for free, via the Fast Hockey link, on the MJHL web site (www.mjhlhockey.ca) featured the top hockey players in the province who were born in 2001.
The first Brandon product selected was speedy forward Tristen Robins who went to the Steinbach Pistons with the 10th pick in the second round. Tristen put up 91 points in 35 games with the Brandon Bantam AAA Wheat Kings. Taken one pick after Robins was forward Tanner Morrison who was drafted by this year's MJHL Champions Portage Terriers. Morrison had 39 points in 36 regular season games this past season.
The third round didn't see a Brandon product selected however the fourth round was very active as three players from this seasons Bantam AAA Wheat Kings: Colin Cook, Drayson Collyer, and Dylan Halliday were each drafted by Wawayseecappo, OCN, and Virden respectively.
Portage chose goaltender Trent Minor with the last pick in the 5th round. Jared Twerdoclib, a defenseman, was the last Brandon became property of the Dauphin Kings with the 3rd pick in the 6th and final round.
Notes: Minor, Robins, and Halliday (pictured below) were all drafted by WHL teams earlier in the summer. Neepawa Natives had the first pick overall and selected Parker Malchuk out of Birtle. Virden's first pick was Logan Rands, a defenseman, out of Portage. Other Westman residents selected include Callum Fortin, Randy Cooke and Jordan Chudley of Souris, Cody Shearer from Wawanesa, Zane McDonald of Minnedosa, and Vista's Cole Muir.
