MMIW Prayerful Walkers on their way to Brandon

A small group of Anishinaabek youth are walking from the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation on the Bruce Peninsula across Canada in memory of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls. Their goal is to walk across the entire country from sea to sea to sea. They are walking the TransCanada and expect to be in Brandon by this Saturday (July 21).   “Da-namaamin moseyang giw-ganchigaazjig kwewag is Ojibwe for ‘we will walk in prayer for those murdered women,’” says E Naad Maa Get (Branden Emmerson) one of those walking. “Each day we walk in a prayerful manner for one of the murdered or missing. We have that person in our minds as we walk. And we re-tell her story on our facebook page, and on Twitter @danamaamin (#prayerwalk). In this way, we remind ourselves why we walk so far from home, and we keep these women and their stories in the minds of Canadians.” E Naad Maa Get and Niibin (Tianna Fillo), the other principle Walker, are members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. They left Nawash in December. Their logo, designed by Nawash artist Polly Keeshig-Tobias, is of a woman clothed in red cloth (in keeping with the REDress symbol). It is sewn with megis shells, sacred to the Great Lakes Anishinaabek. The flowers represent the Indian Paintbrush, known in Ojibwe as ‘Grandmothers Hair’

Up In Smoke

With the legalization of recreational cannabis coming this fall, we have been fielding a lot of calls and emails from both investors and tenants regarding what this new law will mean for the rentals that we manage in Brandon and Thompson. While the federal and provincial governments have both been careful (and a bit slow, in my opinion) in developing policy related to recreational cannabis for Manitoba from my research, this is how I think some of the regulations will play out when it comes to rental property. If you live in a smoke-free apartment complex, meaning that the units are non-smoking, that would also mean it would a smoke-free environment for recreational and medical cannabis. Conversely, if smoking is permitted on the patio or balcony then recreational and medical cannabis use would be permitted in those areas. What about growing cannabis plants in an apartment? If you have a medical permit to grow cannabis in Canada you are able to grow up to five plants inside or two plants outside. Please keep in mind that this does not necessarily mean that you can grow the plants inside your apartment or on the property of your landlord; you need to refer to the rules and regulations signed when you moved into your apartment. In addition, if you choose (and are able) to grow cannabis in your apartment, you should update your liability insurance for the increased risk of fire related to the process of growing these types of plants If you do not have a medical permit to grow cannabis it will continue to be illegal in Manitoba, which will no doubt be a rule violation of most apartment complexes. Keep in mind that apartments were not designed to withstand the heat and humidity that is required for growing cannabis. These conditions could lead to issues with mold and may end up resulting in an expensive renovation project for the property owner. Sometimes unforeseen projects can have an adverse effect on rental rates. While trying not to be Buzz Killington, the changed laws in regard to cannabis will definitely have an impact on rental properties and condo developments. I really hope the changes allow for the responsible use of cannabis while having a minimal impact on the residents (and children) who choose not to indulge. The policies and enforcement at properties managed by Vionell Holdings will be geared towards the quiet enjoyment of the residence. This means free from unnecessary dangers and health risks (like the ones created by grow ops) and maintaining a smoke-free environment. Colombian Independence Day Celebration & Parade

Colombian Independence Day is celebrated annually on the July the 20th.  The event marks the day in 1810 "when protests in Bogotá, the capital, led to the formation of an independent government and ultimately to independence from Spain in 1819." The Colombian community would like to invite people in Brandon Manitoba to join them and be part of their celebration, learn about their culture and diversity of their beautiful home country, To help celebrate a parade will start at the North Hill Inn parking lot, and move forward to 18th street south to Victoria Ave E and finish at the Rideau Park. The event will have food, dance performances, music, games, and entertainment.

What You Need to Know About Gambling in Canada

Contrary to popular belief, gambling in one form or another is legal everywhere across Canada. However, due to the sheer size of the country and its administrative division, gambling is regulated differently in each of the country’s ten provinces and three territories. Whether we are talking about lotteries, racetracks or casinos, all gambling organizations must follow state’s laws. Therefore, factors such as how you gamble, what you play, as well as the minimum age are entirely dependant on where you are. Here is what you need to know about gambling in Canada. Types of Gambling in Canada Canada offers a wide range of gambling options and opportunities across the country, from commercial casino operations, racetracks, small bingo halls, to slot machines, ticket lotteries, and Video Lottery Terminals (also known as VLTs). Further on, if you want to get a clearer picture of what Canada has to offer in terms online gambling, video slots, casino bonuses and the like, you can see more about this subject on Casino Bonus Canada. Suffice to say, when it comes to gambling, Canada is nothing short of generous. As we have stated in the introduction of this article, all types of gambling are regulated on a state level. For example, the largest gambling city in Canada is arguably Edmonton, state of Alberta, with 15 gambling facilities, 201 tables games, and about 5,000 gaming, slot and video poker machines. Furthermore, the largest Casino is located in Montreal, Quebec. Speaking of which… Gambling Casinos in Canada Casino gambling is the form of gambling that appeals the most to visitors and locals, right after online slots and poker. Naturally, Canada has a lot to offer in terms of gambling facilities. There are more than 100 casinos operating as we speak across the country, except three provinces – Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. But surprisingly, gambling is not the only thing that some of Canada’s casinos have to offer. Several gambling operations, such as the Mont-Tremblant and Manoir Richelieu (both are located in the province of Quebec), for example, are sumptuous, picturesque facilities that have become local landmarks, attracting tourists from across the country and the world. However, visitors who want a Vegas-style gambling experience can get it at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, Sand Hills Casino in Manitoba or the Montreal Casino or Caesars in Windsor, Ontario. These facilities offer live shows, restaurants as well as various stores and boutiques. Resort Casinos in Canada In terms of numbers, Ontario has the most casinos (25), with four of them being resorts: Casino Rama in Orillia Caesars in Windsor, right across the border from Detroit Casino Niagara Other worthy casino resorts are located in the province of British Columbia: River Rock Casino Resort – a huge complex that will satisfy all gambling aficionados. St Eugene Golf Resort & Casino – located in the Rocky Mountains. Lake City Casino – a gorgeous resort located right in the Okanagan Valley, near golf courses and wineries. Age Requirements The age requirement for entering casinos in Canada generally corresponds to the drinking age, which varies depending on the province and territory. For example, people as young as 19 can enter a casino in Canada, except Quebec, Alberta, and Manitoba, where the minimum age is 18. These age restrictions apply to the restaurants and theatres within casinos as well. Conclusion In terms of gambling destinations, most people will think about Las Vegas and Atlantic City, rather than Quebec or Alberta. But Canada has a lot of good things to offer when it comes to quality gambling and casino resorts, a fact which many visitors will confirm. If you are planning a visit to the country or you are simply looking for a novel destination to play a round of BlackJack, then Canada’s resorts might be right up your alley.
