Mid-Canada Fasteners & Tools Ltd (358 Park Avenue East) recently opened a location in Brandon, on June 6, 2018.  They carry "fasteners, hand tools, portable and stationary power tools, safety supplies, abrasives, adhesives and cutting tools."  A grand opening has been scheduled for July 18. Shop on the Corner, located at 2340 Rosser Ave, changed owners on June 2, 2018.   The corner convenience store is now under the ownership of Victor's Bakery and carries a new selection of ethnic groceries and drinks, including popular drinks from Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Columbia! Happy Hippo Brandon, located in the Shoppers Mall, closed permanently on Saturday, June 30, 2018.  The announcement was made on their Facebook page on June 20th and merchandise was offered at reduced prices for the next 10 days. Pita Central also closed their doors for the last time on June 30.  They had been serving Brandon a variety of pitas, wraps, rice bowls, and smoothies since December of 2007.

June 2018 Shoppers Mall Summer Update: La Vie en Rose, Sobeys extra Interior Entrance, Washroom Upgrades and more Brandon, Manitoba – June 28, 2018 – It’s going to be a busy summer at Shoppers Mall! The mall announced a slate of summer activities today, including store openings, washroom renovations and an update on construction of the connection to Sobeys extra Brandon South.The interior entrance to Sobeys extra Brandon South, which will allow shoppers to enter and exit the grocery store without having to go outside, is on schedule to be complete in mid-August.    “An interior connection to Sobeys extra is something our guests have been looking forward to, so I think a lot of people will be happy to hear this news,” said Kim James, General Manager, Shoppers Mall. “Having that connection between the mall and the grocery store will provide a convenient way for guests to do all their shopping without having to leave the mall.” The mall also announced that Canadian lingerie retailer La Vie en Rose will be opening a store onsite. The popular brand produces and sells a range of undergarments, sleepwear and swimwear for women. La Vie en Rose is expected to open in time for the Christmas season. Development of the East Side Mario’s restaurant located in the mall parking lot is also close to completion. The Italian-American casual dining restaurant will be opening in late July/early August. This summer, Shoppers Mall will also perform an extensive upgrade to the Food Court washrooms and associated common areas. In addition to all men’s and women’s washrooms, the mall will update the Family and Handicapped washrooms, the Parenting Room and the washroom hallway. “This renovation will give our washroom facilities a bright new look and upgraded, more eco-friendly equipment,” said James. “We’re making this investment so that we can continue to provide the best experience for shoppers and their families.” Washroom upgrades will be completed in phases to minimize inconvenience, with signs posted in the mall to keep customers updated as work progresses. Renovations begin July 3 and are expected to be completed in October.

Hogs Fries and Dogs is a food truck in Brandon who are in their first year of operation.  The company purchased an old Fire Rescue truck and spent the entire winter converting it into a food truck.  The conversion was no easy task as they first had to install custom built hoods to fit the truck and then had to purchase all new cooking equipment.  Jasmine Brandt tells bdnmb.ca that their specialty is their fries which are cooked in beef lard instead of oil.  She said that the biggest difference one will notice is that the fries are a lot crispier and have more flavor.  They also serve a variety of hot dogs and drinks.   Even though it is their first year, Jasmine said that the summer has started off extremely busy and that they already have plenty of gigs lined up for the rest of the season.  They are going to be at Rocking the Fields, Minnedosa Fun Fest, and the Austin Rodeo.  They can also be found Tuesdays in Princess Park for Music in the Park.  If you are considering booking them for your next company/community event, fair, rodeo, or sporting event then you can always contact them at the following email address: jasminebrandt50@gmail.com.

Coffee buddies that meet regularly at Tim Horton’s on Victoria Avenue are going to be feeling a little lost for the next three weeks or so as the store undergoes a major renovation to both the exterior and interior of the building.   Owner Rhonda Pardy said the update is part of their franchise obligation where the store needs to be upgraded every 10 years. This restaurant portion closed on Monday, although the drive-through remains open and will be open for the duration of the renovation.   Pardy said the upgrade is extensive and includes new kitchen equipment, bathroom fixtures, furniture, decor and a slight change to the layout. The store will be more of an open concept featuring a fireplace and a comfortable, casual seating area. The exterior of the building will also have a fresh, new look.   The renovation provided an ideal time to install the latest kitchen equipment so that this location could provide customers with newest products as introduced by Tim Hortons.   “We are pleased that we’ve been able to give back a little to the community in the process as we donated some of the kitchen equipment to Helping Hands; the vanities, sinks, taps and so on to Habitat for Humanity, and all the tables and chairs were donated to families affected by the fire in downtown Brandon last month,” said Pardy. “We’re really excited about the changes, it is time for a new look!”

The Petro Canada gas station on Victoria Avenue is undergoing some major renovations this summer. The pumps and car wash were closed yesterday for five-weeks of construction, providing inclement weather doesn’t come into play. Retail Licensee Chris O’Rourke said there will be entirely new canopy, all new systems put in place, a new car wash and other improvements such as energy efficient lighting. While customers won’t be able to fill their vehicles with petroleum during construction, the convenience store will remain open and will maintain regular hours. O’Rourke runs two Petro Canada sites in Brandon and one on the #1 Hwy at Portage la Prairie.
